Families,

We had a wonderful PBIS Kickoff Day at Wiggin Street! The Kenyon Men’s Football and Women’s Soccer teams joined our students on the playground before school for some fun and play.

Over the past two weeks, students have been learning and practicing behavioral expectations throughout the building. They have also been reminded that we are Rooted in Respect—respecting ourselves, others, and the space around us. As part of our PBIS theme, students watched a video of me reading Even Superheroes Have Bad Days, which you can find below. We wrapped up our PBIS Kickoff with an exciting Super U Challenge assembly!

This weekend is the Kenyon Student Involvement Fair, where many Kenyon students will have the opportunity to sign up to volunteer at Wiggin Street this semester. Last school year, we had more than 150 Kenyon students volunteering in our classrooms each week! Interviews for our Kenyon Work-Study students will also begin next week. We are incredibly fortunate to be part of a community that supports our school so generously, and we are excited to welcome our Kenyon volunteers and Work-Study students back to Wiggin Street.

Squishies, NeeDohs, Fidgets…OH MY!

Beginning next week, students will not be permitted to bring squishies, NeeDohs, fidgets, or similar items from home.

We have seen an increase in these items coming to school, and many are being used as toys rather than as tools to support learning. When a student needs a fidget or sensory tool to be successful at school, the school will provide an appropriate option based on the student’s individual needs.

Thank you for your understanding and support in helping us keep classrooms focused on learning!

Water Day

Water Day is next Wednesday for students who turned in their summer reading logs. Our Kindergarten students will also join in the fun with a snow cone and chalk drawing as a special welcome to Wiggin Street!

If your child is participating in Water Day, please make sure they bring:

  • A towel
  • A change of clothes
  • An extra pair of shoes

We always have a few items left behind, so please label everything with your child’s name so we can easily return any belongings.

YES Concerts

You will notice several YES Concerts listed in our upcoming events. The Youth Enrichment Series is funded by the Knox County Foundation and facilitated by the Knox Educational Service Center. The series brings together students from Centerburg, Danville, East Knox, Fredericktown, Mount Vernon, and St. Vincent de Paul for live performances at the Knox Memorial Theater. We are grateful that our students have the opportunity to experience these special performances throughout the school year.

Wednesday Morning Fitness Returns!

Some of you may remember our Wednesday Morning Fitness sessions from last fall and winter. We are excited that Kenyon athletes will be returning on Wednesday mornings before school at 8:40 a.m. to introduce students to their sports and get them moving!

Beginning next Wednesday, September 2, the Kenyon Women’s Lacrosse team will be on the playground. Students will have the opportunity to learn lacrosse skills such as scooping, turning, and weaving. We are looking forward to another fun season of Wednesday Morning Fitness!

Lastly, after school, we would appreciate that students not play on the grassy area beside the school. It is not school property, and we wouldn't want someone to get hurt. We appreciate your help with this.

We hope you have a wonderful weekend, and we look forward to seeing everyone next week! Thank you for trusting us with your children each day. It is a privilege to learn, grow, and have fun alongside them.

Sincerely,

Christy Grandstaff
Principal, Wiggin Street Elementary

Interested in being more involved with our school? There are 2 opportunities below! Kindergarten parents can sign up to provide snacks for teachers in September. Our water day is September 2nd, and we still need volunteers to help that day.

Also, we would love to have you join us for the next PTO meeting on Tuesday, September 1st, at 5:00 in the school library. Hope to see you then!

We require that all adults attending field trips will need a BCI background check on file. The board will pay for any parent's background check done through the MVCSD district office to go on field trips or to volunteer at the school. The BCI background check will need to be done every 3 years and needs to be on file in our office. If any parent needs a background check, please go to the district office with your driver's license. Thank you.

School Attendance School Attendance

Our doors open at 8:40, so students should not be dropped off prior to that time for safety due to supervision. Attendance is taken at 9:00, and your child's success in school depends on them being prompt, so they are ready for morning routines which can reduce student anxiety. If they are tardy for some reason, you will need to come into the office to sign them in. If they are ill and need to be absent, please call the office. A note of explanation is needed in the office upon returning to school including medical excuses if applicable.

You can send a note with your child to the office in the morning if there is a change in their pick up routine. Sometimes changes are necessary during the school day for pick up. If you have a change in the way your child needs to go home, it is preferred that you send an email to your child's teacher and Alicia, our secretary, at ahiggins@mvcsd.us. Phone calls must be made to the office before 2:00 pm if needed, so the change can be communicated.

Chromebooks

As a district we are 1:1 on Chromebooks, and students in grades 1-5 receive a touchscreen Chromebook to be used in class. K students regularly use iPads and/or Chromebooks that are assigned to students and kept in the classroom.

The MVCSD Student Electronic Device Handbook can also be found on the district website, but I've linked it here for convenience. Please read carefully to understand that "a Student Electronic Device or any of its accessories that are lost (whereabouts unknown) or damaged is the responsibility of the student and parent involved in the loss of property.

There is an option to purchase insurance on devices kept at school, and more information can be found here: OPT IN Student Electronic Device Insurance Flyer (These will be sent home at the start of the school year.) The cost is $39 per device (K-12). Accidents happen, so I highly encourage the purchase of insurance to save you from paying for the cost of a replacement screen or Chromebook with a replacement cost of $368-$455.
