Welcome to the 2026-27 School Year!!
Welcome to the 2026-27 School Year at Newport High School. We hope everyone is having a great and relaxing summer. Please see below for important information for the beginning of the upcoming school year.
Open House--August 11th
Wildcat families, mark your calendars!
Newport High School is hosting our Open House on Tuesday, August 11 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM.
Stop by anytime during those two hours. There's no set schedule, so come when it works for you.
This is your chance to meet the teachers and staff who will be working with your student this year, walk the building, find classrooms before day one, and pick up class schedules. Counselors and coaches will be on hand, and you can check out the clubs, athletics, and activities your Wildcat might want to join. Bring your questions. We'll have answers.
We're looking forward to a great year, and it starts with you walking through our doors. See you on the 11th!
Macbook Pick Up
Due to technology security changes at the state level. Students will receive their Macbooks the first week of school. This is a change from previous years
Welcome to Newport
Welcome to our New Staff Members for the 26-27 school year
We are excited to welcome aboard 5 new staff members to the Wildcat family for the 26-27 school year. These new staff members are a great addition to our school that bring experience, knowledge, and an excitement to the classroom. Welcome to NHS!!
- Charles Dooley--HS Science
- Ollie Gilliland--HS Math
- David Sekowski--MS Social Studies
- David Meidinger--MS Math
- Lyndsey Borders--Special Education
First Day of School
A brand new year starts Wednesday, August 12
The first bell rings at 8:15 AM, with cafeteria doors opening at 7:50 AM for breakfast, so there's plenty of time to eat and settle in before the day begins.
If you're new to Newport High School, don't worry about finding your way. Staff will be stationed throughout the building all morning to point you toward classrooms, lockers, and anywhere else you need to go. Returning students, we can't wait to see how you've grown over the summer.
Come with a charged device, something to write with, and your best attitude. That last one matters more than the rest.
See you on August 12th!!
2026-27 Newport High School Cell Phone Policy Update
NEWPORT HIGH SCHOOL
Cell Phone and Personal Electronic Device Policy
Grades 7 through 12 | 2026-2027 School Year
To Students and Parents:
Kentucky House Bill 208 requires all public schools to prohibit cell phone use during instructional time. This is state law, and it applies to every student and staff member. This policy keeps the focus on learning while staying practical to follow across all grade levels. Please read it carefully with your child. The signature portion is on the second page.
Policy Overview
Grades 7 and 8 (Middle School Students)
All cell phones must be turned in to your first bell teacher at the beginning of the school day. Phones are stored securely in the classroom and returned at the end of the day. There are no exceptions.
Grades 9 through 12 (High School Students)
Beginning this year, every classroom has a locked storage box for cell phones. At the start of each bell, place your phone in your teacher's lock box. The teacher locks the box and begins class, and phones stay locked for the entire class period. At the end of class, the box is unlocked and you collect your phone to carry to your next period. Your phone stays in the box even when you leave the room, including for the restroom. If you are leaving the building early, you may retrieve your phone before the class period ends.
Headphones, Earbuds, and Other Audio Devices
This section applies to grades 7 through 12. Headphones, earbuds, AirPods, Beats, and any similar audio devices are not permitted during the school day. If you bring them to school, they must stay in your locker. These devices count as electronics and must remain put away during class, the same as cell phones.
What "Away" Means
Any time your phone is in your possession during the school day, it must be:
Completely out of sight (not on your desk, lap, or in your hand)
Silent or powered off
Stored in your backpack, locker, or pocket
Authorized Use
Cell phones may only be used during instructional time when:
A teacher specifically authorizes use for educational purposes
There is a genuine emergency
You have written permission from the administration for medical monitoring needs
NHS Wildly Important Goal for Attendance 2026-27
Every day is a fresh chance for your student to learn something new, laugh with a friend, and take one more step forward, and it all starts with showing up. When our Wildcats are here day after day, great things happen. They stay connected to their teachers, they keep their momentum going, and they get the full Newport High experience we work so hard to give them.
That is why we are excited about our goal this year to reach 94.4 percent attendance together. It is a goal we know our families can help us hit, and every single day counts toward it. Get your Wildcat here, cheer them on, and let us take care of the rest. Here every day, the Wildcat way.
