DCSC Construction Update

Update #2

DCSC ConstructionUpdateUpdate #2

Construction continues at South Elementary!

Construction is still taking place at South Elementary, and we could not be more excited with the results! Everything is starting to come together so well, and it is becoming easier every day to envision what it will look like in the end.

Over the last month, we have seen a lot of parking lot and classroom addition work take place. At this point in time, we have asphalt laid in our future back parking lot, placed just beyond the outline of what will soon be full classrooms!

Keep reading for a brief overview of what is in the works.

Lot Grading Lot Grading

As you can probably guess, digging up or tearing down any structure can create uneven surfaces that can make rebuilding tricky. Throughout August, work was done to grade the lot, or level the surface, before more building can take place.

Lime stabilization

Lime stabilization is the process of adding lime to a reactive soil to make it stronger. This helps create a strong foundation for future builds.

Lot grading

In this photo, the soil is being shifted around to create an even surface. Anything that comes up too high will be moved to fill in spaces that are too low.

Proof rolling

After the lot was stabilized, it was time to proof roll. This is essentially a way to test the pavement layers and make sure they are strong enough to handle the work to come.

Classrooms Outlined Classrooms Outlined

If you look at the ground in the back of the building, you will see lots of bars forming big rectangles. These are the forms and footers for our additional classroom space! While there are no walls yet, there are nice blocks that outline exactly how big each room will be.

Lines painted

Before any digging can take place, the construction workers must map out a plan. These lines show them exactly where the additional space will be and how big it should be in the end.

Footings placed

In this image, you can see the footings for the additional classroom space in the ground. This is essential reinforced concrete that will help bear the weight of the final structure. It's part of the foundation!

Outlines from above

Here is a drone image showing the outlines as they appear now! Just imagine what it will look like when there are desks and whiteboards.

Asphalting Asphalting

You can't have a proper parking lot without asphalt! After digging, leveling, and proofing, it was time to lay the new surface.

Surface prepped

In the image above, you can see the white part in front of the classroom outlines. This is the prep work for the asphalt.

Asphalt binder installed

As it says in the name, asphalt binder essentially binds the asphalt together. It's like glue for the surface! This is the asphalt binder installed at the loading dock.

Look at that pretty surface! This photo shows the asphalt binder installed at the parking lot.

So much more to come! So much more to come!

As you might know, South is under construction now, and DCHS will be joining in on the fun during this school year. Below is our most recent video update about our Master Campus Plan.
