Building Update

Dear Parents,

What an incredible week we have had! We were treated to wonderful concerts during the day, and in the evenings, families enjoyed the outstanding performances by our band and orchestra. It was truly a joy to witness our students creating such beautiful music together, and then our band and orchestra Directors Mrs. Dykema and Mrs. Biasiello went all out to honor the eighth grade students in truly remarkable ways.

Speaking of moving experiences, we took time this week to show our deep admiration and appreciation for our teachers and support staff during staff appreciation week. Despite the challenges, they approach each day with a smile and an unwavering belief in the potential of every student. They possess unique qualities that make Shepard Middle School an exceptional place. We thank our PTSO and District Office for all their hard work in ensuring this week was special for our staff.

On Tuesday, May 14, sixth and seventh grade students will take their last MAP test which will be a math test in the morning. Please help your child arrive on time and read additional details below.

Finally, next week Wednesday marks the end of our year-long spirit competition hosted by our very own Shepard Student Council. The theme of Wednesday's dress up day is Shepard Colors. Sixth grade students/staff members should wear white, 7th grade students/staff members should wear red, and 8th grade students/staff members should wear black. Based on the total number of spirit day points accumulated over the year, an ExSEL class from each grade level will be selected to enjoy a special cool-down treat. May the best ExSEL class win!

And a quick reminder to sixth grade parents that tonight is the last social dance in Shepard's gym from 7:30 - 8:30 pm.

We wish all our moms a Happy Mother's Day Weekend!

Sincerely,

Dr. Theresa Dunkin, Principal

Mrs. Marie Zlotnikov, Associate Principal

Mrs. Ginger Logemann, District Coordinator of Student Services

Strategies to best support your child during the assessment window:

PRINCIPAL 200 BREAKFAST

Once again this Friday morning, we celebrated students on the Principal 200 board. These are students who demonstrate aspects of the Spartan PRIDE Code (Personal Responsibility, Respect, Inclusivity, Determination, Empathy). Students are nominated by staff and as each column fills, they are invited to a very special Friday breakfast.

Graduation Information

Families of 8th Graders:

Eighth grade graduation will be here before we know it. Below find answers to some initial questions. We will continue to update our communication about the ceremony and activities as they become available.

Graduation Q/A:

1) When is graduation? Wednesday, June 5th, 2024. Students will need to arrive at DHS Auditorium at 4:30 pm. Please let us know by May 15th if your child will NOT be attending the ceremony.

2) Do students come to school that day? Yes. On Wednesday, eighth grade will be dismissed at 10 am to get home and prepare for graduation. There will be a bus to take them home if needed. Monday and Tuesday are regular school days.

2) Where is graduation? Graduation is held in the Auditorium at Deerfield High School (DHS)

3) What time is graduation? Graduation will begin promptly at 5:30 pm.

4) When will we receive our tickets? Students will bring tickets home following the graduation practice on June 4, 2024.

5.) How many tickets will each student receive? Each student receives 4 tickets for the ceremony (your 8th grader does not require a ticket). There are no additional tickets for graduation. Sometimes asking a friend if they need all 4 of their tickets can be a helpful way to find a extra ticket.

6.) When will students receive graduation gowns? Gowns will be distributed on June 4th. This is also the day that the class photo and individual graduation pictures will be taken.

7) Is there a student celebration after graduation? Our PTSO runs a celebratory event and will be distributing information about this.
