Flower Valley Vision
From the Principal...
Dear Flower Valley Community,
I hope you are all doing well. It has been wonderful to have all of our students back in the building! :) This upcoming week is our annual International Night at Rockville High School. All of the details are below. This is one of my favorite events as we come together to celebrate the wonderful diversity of our entire community. I hope to see everyone there!
You may have heard from your child that the building is cold in certain areas. The air conditioning was turned on this past week, so layers are recommended. Just be sure to label all clothing items in case something ends up in the Lost and Found.
I am in the process of scheduling a principal chat with the community. This will be to provide an update about current happenings and to hear from you about how everything is going. There will also be an open forum time for questions and future topics of discussion. The tentative date is May 14th from 9:30-10:15AM. Please let me know here if you plan to attend and if virtual or in person would work better for you. I am looking forward to this opportunity to come together and chat.
Wishing you peace,
Dr. Fish

Jewish American Heritage Month
In May we will celebrate Jewish American Heritage Month. It is a time to recognize the ways Jewish people have contributed to US culture and history. For the first two weeks of May during our morning announcements, we will learn about some famous Jewish Americans such as Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Barbie Doll Founder Ruth Handler and blue jean inventor Levi Strauss. We will identify several Jewish holidays and traditions and take a peek at some ways Jewish members of our staff embrace their culture.
Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
We’re excited to celebrate Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month at Flower Valley this May! Each week during our morning announcements, we’ll highlight members of our amazing staff as they share stories about their culture, childhood, and personal experiences. We’ll also spotlight influential AANHPI figures who have made a lasting impact in their communities and beyond. To help students connect with and appreciate these diverse cultures, we’ll be providing themed coloring pages and engaging activities throughout the month. Additionally, we’ve put together a special playlist of read-aloud books you can enjoy with your child. Take a moment to tune in together:

What is the Ladder of Accountability?
At Flower Valley, we’ve introduced the Ladder of Accountability as a way to nurture responsibility and personal growth in our students. Our Student Government Association even created skits, which were featured in our weekly announcements, to help introduce the concept. This framework encourages students to understand the importance of making thoughtful choices, owning their actions, and learning from both successes and mistakes. As students progress through the ladder, they gradually take on more responsibility for their behavior and decisions, while developing essential life skills like problem-solving, self-reflection, and accountability. We believe that this approach not only supports their academic development but also helps them grow into thoughtful, responsible individuals. Our hope is that the Ladder of Accountability will empower students both in and outside of school.
Parent Input for Next Year: Due May 9th
With the end of the current school year quickly approaching, thoughts turn to the placement of students in classes for the next school year. Your child’s current teachers will bring all they know about your child’s individual needs and capabilities to the placement decision, as we complete a thorough articulation process for each and every student. Parental input is also valued in the process, and this form can be used to provide the school with such information. In addition, this form will be passed on to your child’s new teacher(s) in the fall.
It should be noted that this form is not a teacher request form. Flower Valley Elementary School does not honor specific teacher requests in our process for class placement.
Please complete and submit this form no later than Friday, May 9th for each current grade K-4 child if your child will be returning. Enrollment information for incoming kindergarten students will be a separate process. Further confidential concerns may be emailed to Dr. Fish at Angie_L_Fish@mcpsmd.org.
Planning for Spring Testing at FVES
Students in grades 3 to 5 will take the MCAP assessments in April and May. The Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP) provides information to educators, parents, and the public on student progress towards proficiency on the Maryland College and Career Ready Standards. Please refer to grade level newsletters for specific dates and times of testing. If you can avoid appointments during these times, it would be greatly appreciated.

Registration will be online through the ParentVUE portal. Families that are new to MCPS will need to create a ParentVue account here. Please share this information with anyone who you know will have a kindergarten student next year. Make sure to scroll down on the enrollment page and enroll for the correct school year (2025-2026). Interested in Volunteering at FVES?
Parent and caregiver volunteers support the overall success of Flower Valley. We welcome volunteers and are truly grateful for the ways you support our school each and every day. Some volunteer opportunities include serving as a mystery reader in class, sharing information about your career or hobby via a class presentation or visit, supporting lunch and recess, chaperoning field trips, supporting in-school events, and so much more! If any of our families have a speciality in coaching or soccer, we would also welcome your support with our students during their recess soccer games.
If you are interested in serving as a volunteer, please see the information below and contact Mrs. Atanda at Jennifer_T_Atanda@mcpsmd.org. Volunteer clearance lasts for 3 years. Many volunteers who completed the training upon returning to in person learning three years ago need to complete the training again.
