Reminders about Phones and Smart Watches for Students
As a reminder, our district has a policy for student cell phones and smart watches. While students may have these devices on campus, they must be turned off and put away in backpacks. Please take a moment to review the excerpts from the FISD Student Handbook.
Frisco ISD Student Handbook (excerpts from pages 53-54)
Electronic Devices and Technology Resources (All Grade Levels)
Possession and Use of Personal Telecommunications Devices, Including Cell Phones, and Other Electronic Devices (Apple Watches, Airpods, etc.)
The district permits students to possess personal cell phones for safety purposes; however, these devices must remain turned off during the instructional day.
If a student uses such a device, leaves the device turned on, or displays the device without authorization, it will result in confiscation of the device. The device will only be returned to a parent or guardian.
■ The first offense will result in the phone/watch/tablet being taken up and returned to the parent with a warning for the student/parent.
■ The second offense will result in a $15 fine being required before the phone/watch/tablet is returned to the parent.
■ The third offense will result in an additional $15 fine being required before the phone/watch/tablet is returned to the parent.
■ A fourth offense will result in the phone/watch/tablet being confiscated for the remainder of the school year and an additional $15 fee being required for the return.
Parents will be notified within two school days after the device has been confiscated and may set a time to pick up the device and pay the fine if applicable.
If the parent refuses to pick up the phone or pay the fine, the company whose name and address appear on the device will be notified if applicable.
Any disciplinary action will be in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct. The district is not responsible for damaged, lost, or stolen telecommunications devices.
Rogers Innovation Fair (RIF) is Coming!
Lost and Found Items
Our Rogers students have forgotten many items around campus lately! We have quite a collection of student jackets, hoodies, etc. in the cafe.
Please remember to label winter coats, sweaters and hoodies for your student. It helps us return items to students. We have many nice and new items unclaimed. We have been encouraging students to check the Lost and Found this week for any missing personal items.
Reminder - IDs Are Required For All Visitors To Campus
This is true for parents picking up sick students, parents checking students out for appointments, and parents coming for lunch, Mystery Reader, or GMR. Thank you for your understanding as we continue to make Rogers Elementary a safe and secure place for students and staff to learn.
1st Grade CogAT Testing
On Wednesday, January 25th and Thursday January 26th Rogers’ First Graders will take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT). The test will be given over 2 days for approximately 1.5 hours (this time includes breaks). Please schedule morning appointments on days other than CogAT testing. The CogAT test gives teachers and parents a snapshot of students’ higher level thinking, reasoning, and problem solving abilities (verbal, nonverbal, quantitative, and overall ability), as compared to other first graders in the nation. Please be sure your first grader has a good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast on this day. Please encourage your child with a hug, a reminder to listen carefully the first time, and to do their “Personal Best” on the test.

Mystery Reader Program Launch
The Mystery Reader program at Rogers Elementary provides parents/grandparents the opportunity to directly volunteer in their child's classroom. If you are interested in serving in this capacity, please ensure to complete a background check at least one week PRIOR to visiting your student's classroom.
A Mystery Reader program is ta guest reader, BUT their identity is kept secret to build anticipation and excitement. Teachers may even choose to give clues before they arrive to get the students extra excited!
One of the benefits of starting a guest reader program is that students LOVE welcoming others into their classroom. It is also a great way to mix things up and add a little spice our reading instruction. Students will hear fluent reading and another voice from a different adult. We have received feedback that family members and other significant adults love coming to see their Rogers students in action. An added benefit is that students will get to practice hosting others and sending thank you notes after the guest reader’s visit.
FISD Board Policy requires that each volunteer and/or mentor undergo a background check before working with students. You will be prompted to complete the background check during your VOLY account creation process. Keep an eye on your inbox for your background check approval (the process can take up to 3-5 business days). Once approved, you will be able to sign up directly for volunteer opportunities through the VOLY platform. To volunteer at Rogers Elementary, you will need to create a VOLY account by visiting https://friscoisd.voly.org.

GMR Visitors Welcome! Must Sign up
We are pleased to open our doors for GMR visitors to attend our assemblies. Please note that there are limited spots available and a sign up is required to attend.
Also please note that GMR is no longer every single Friday.
Please make sure to arrive a few minutes early to present your photo ID and get checked in!
Lunch Visitors - SIGN UP REQUIRED
Lunch visitors have begun on campus and we have enjoyed seeing families have a meal with their students!
Please remember that sign ups are required in order to eat lunch on campus with your student. If the sign up for the grade level is full and a parent comes to eat lunch, unfortunately we will not be able to accommodate you that day. The sign up is linked below for quick access!
As a reminder, we ask that parents visit 1-2 times per month to allow all interested visitors the opportunity to eat lunch with their student. You must bring an ID in order to be granted access to the building.
Finally, we ask that you do not park in the fire lane.

December's Character Trait - ZEST
Link for Zest Challenge Board (fun for home)
Why does zest matter?
Zest means approaching a situation, or life in general, with excitement and energy, not approaching tasks or activities halfway or halfheartedly. People who are high in zest are excited to get up in the morning, and they live their lives like an adventure. Zest is a dynamic strength that is directly related to physical and psychological wellness. This strength has the strongest ties to overall life satisfaction and happiness.
Pulse Check: Think about your day and how many times you have done the following:
-Actively participating by asking questions
-Showing enthusiasm through smiles or excited comments
-Approaching new situations with excitement and energy
-Invigorating others around you by talking about their interests (or yours!)
How do I encourage zest in others?
-Model It. Because zest is affected by exercise, go for a walk in between classes or join a sports team.
-Celebrate It. Praise enthusiasm. Enthusiasm is contagious. "Great question!" Or, "I love your excitement about this topic!"
-Enable It. Connect to students’ interests and make work relevant. Tap into questions, topics, and issues that matter to students. Use their questions as a means of learning content.
