ACADEMICS
PSAT - THURSDAY, OCT. 15
What is it and why should I care about it?
Cosponsored by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT)—often shortened to PSAT—is a standardized test targeting 10th and 11th graders in the US. Every year, approximately 3.5 million students take the PSAT test at various high schools.
As it stands, the PSAT is heavily connected to the SAT. One of the test's primary purposes is to act as a precursor to the SAT, and for many students, it is also their first exposure to any college admissions exam. Students will get practice on what to expect of a real college admissions exam testing experience.
The PSAT is a qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program. PSAT scores determine students' eligibility for National Merit scholarships, and each year the top 1% of 11th-grade PSAT takers become Semifinalists. Semifinalists receive national recognition which often leads to scholarship opportunities from various universities.
How can my student prepare?
Through our English & Math classes, our students have been completing test practice questions. There is also an official PSAT Student Guide that offers students insights and practice questions.
VIRTUAL ASSIGNMENT
Due Monday, October 19
Throughout the school year, students will complete asynchronous assignments designed to extend and enrich classroom learning while giving students meaningful opportunities to apply their knowledge independently.
These assignments do not replace the regular school day. Students are still expected to attend school as usual. The term virtual simply means that students have assignments they complete independently outside of their scheduled, teacher-led learning time. These assignments are built into the school year and give students flexibility to manage their work within the time provided.
An important goal of these assignments is to help students develop self-regulated learning skills, including managing their time, staying organized, meeting deadlines, and taking ownership of their learning. These skills will be essential for success in higher education and beyond.
Teachers have reviewed the assignments and expectations with students this week. Students have time to complete the assignments, and all work is due by 7:45 a.m. on October 19.
Because these assignments count toward required instructional minutes and attendance, students who do not complete the assignments by the deadline will receive a grade of 0 and be marked absent for the day.
ACADEMIC PROBATION
Friday, October 16 - End of Quarter 1
Whenever a student begins to experience academic difficulty in a specific course, he/she should contact his/her teacher immediately to request extra help. Teachers may also request with a 24-hour notice that certain students report to the teacher for extra help either before school, at lunch, or after school. Such a request takes precedence over all other activities. At times, the counselor may also contact a student concerning a need for extra help. St. Louis Catholic High School offers weekly Academic Study Hall throughout the school year, free of charge for any student, regardless of grades.
ACADEMIC PROBATION AND REMEDIATION
I. At the first 4½ week grading period (Progress Report) of each quarter, students with 1 F or 2 or more D’s in any subject will be placed on academic support and have the Academic Review team:
a. Student, teacher(s), counselor and coach will create an academic improvement plan
b. Student will attend weekly tutoring sessions offered on campus and submit a tutoring log
II. At the second 4½ weeks grading period (Report Card) of each quarter, students with 1 F or 2 or more D’s in any subject will remain on academic support and continue remediation with the following guidelines:
a. Student, teacher(s), counselor and coach will meet to revise a plan to improve grades
b. Student cannot participate in any extra-curricular activity outside the school day
c. Student cannot practice with the team
d. Student will attend weekly tutoring sessions offered on campus (study hall or teacher meetings) and submit a tutoring log
Note: The student remains on probation/remediation for at least one week and until he/she removes all but one D from his/her grades along with the recommendation of the classroom teacher. At that time, the student may again participate in extra-curricular activities.
III. Students who fail a course are required to attend summer school. Students are placed on Academic Probation for the first quarter of the fall semester after completing the summer school course(s). Students may participate in extracurricular activities and sports if all requirements per the probation contract are met. Students who fail to attend study hall and/or tutoring may be suspended from extracurricular activities and sports. Grades will be reviewed at Q1 Progress Reports, and students who have 1 F or 2 or more D’s will be suspended from extracurricular activities and sports until the end of the first quarter.
The Dean of Academics is responsible for distributing the list of students on probation to sponsors and coaches. Coaches and sponsors are responsible for enforcing the policy.

CHRISTMAS CARD CONTEST
The Institute for the Transformation of Catholic Education (ITCE) is excited to invite students from schools currently being accredited through Lumen Accreditation to showcase their creativity by designing the front cover of our 2026 Christmas card. This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the Christmas season through your students' original artistic talent, while contributing to the mission of Catholic education.
Submission Guidelines:
• Theme: Reflect the joy, hope, and spirit of Christmas.
• Medium: Painting or hand-drawn original designs ONLY.
• Format: Submit your design in high-resolution JPG or PDF format.
• Deadline: All designs must be submitted by November 10, 2026.
Please email your submissions to itce@cua.edu. Be sure to include the student’s first name, school, and grade level with their entry. The chosen entry will be the artwork for the ITCE Christmas card and appear in the ITCE newsletter and will include the student’s information. The school is responsible for seeking parental permission prior to submitting entry.
We look forward to seeing your students’ original, creative expressions of faith and joy as we prepare to celebrate the birth of Christ!
