The Reading Corner
The Reading Corner with Mrs. Snyder
Welcome to another edition of The Reading Corner!
My name is Jennifer Snyder and many of you know me as the Preschool-4th Grade music teacher, but I am also the Robin Hall librarian. You can learn more about how I became a music teacher on my bio page of the school website.
The big question is, how did I become the Robin Hall librarian? Surprisingly, it was by chance! I worked with the librarian who came before me, helping to reshelve books and get new books ready for circulation. When she retired, I was able to step in as the new librarian, and I’ve been doing it for around 6 years, though the details get a bit hazy when you’ve been teaching at the Franklin Academy for 18 years!
I grew up in Mount Vernon, Washington. As an only child I didn’t have any siblings, but we had many stray cats, an occasional dog and two parakeets. I was fortunate to have one of my grandmas live next door to me, so she was just a hop, skip and a jump away. She taught high school English among other subjects, and ended her teaching career as a preschool teacher. When I was little I didn’t go to preschool, I went to my grandma’s house! I have her to thank in large part for my love of reading and my love of kids! One of my favorite memories was reading Mrs. Piggle Wiggle books with her. During the summertime, my family took road trips to places like Montana, California or Nevada. While we were driving, my nose was often stuck inside a book. My parents would say, “Jennifer, put that book down and look around you!”
I have a son, Samuel, who is in 5th grade at The Franklin Academy and my husband Karl is a foster care licensor. We have two black cats-Chloe, age 15, and Cosmo, age 4. Chloe loves to eat and snuggle, and Cosmo loves getting into trouble. When I am not at school I like to play in my garden, go for walks, and cook yummy food. Of course I also like to read! Nowadays I read mostly children’s literature in my quest to provide and recommend quality books to our young Franklin Academy students.
I am currently working on perfecting my skills as a purple person. If you are unsure what that means, ask a kindergartener or first grader to explain how you, too, can become a purple person! (Hint: you don’t have to wear purple or even like the color purple to be a purple person!)
Sincerely,
Mrs. Snyder
Summer Library Books - Please Return ASAP!
Mrs. Samuel is ready to get the books she checked out to all you awesome readers back, disinfected and on the shelves! Please search your house, car, airplane, backpacks, cupboards, bathtubs and under your bed for any books that need to be returned.
Thank you! and Thank you Donald Schultz for this cool picture!
A Note From PALS (Parents Actively Lending Support)
Room Parents
Here is a way to get involved right away, and can be done remotely. We recruit room parents for every class from preschool-4th grade, and for every house advisory group in Middle School.
The room parent serves as a liaison between the teacher/advisor and other class parents, and also between the class and PALS. In a regular year, the room parent would help teachers to plan class parties, organize gifts from parents for their teacher's birthday, organize class projects for the auction, Family Fun Night, or other events, and help communicate important information to all parents and families in their class.
There's so much information coming to families all the time - it's easy to miss. Room parents build relationships with the families in their class, and can send a friendly note that might get through when mass communication fails.
We have a Room Parent Coordinator at each building to support the room parents and give guidance and suggestions. Please contact these amazing volunteers directly if you would like more information or to volunteer to be your classroom parent.

Volunteer Opportunities - PALS
PALS is asking all parents to take a minute and fill out our volunteer interest form.
Volunteers are an important part of our school community. There are many jobs that can be done from home, by email or online, that help to support our teachers, students, and fellow families. Even if you cannot volunteer now, we would love to know about your interests and special skills that might contribute to our community when we are able to gather in-person again.
Two current needs:
Room parents
Teacher appreciation - we need a small group of creative parents who are willing to join our teacher appreciation team. We'll need to be extra-creative this year due to safety guidelines, but our teachers and staff members need positive boosts from us more than ever!
Tasks might include dropping off birthday cards and a candy bar during their birthday month, organizing a surprise donuts or bagel morning, arranging for special treats throughout the year, and help getting the community involved for our big Teacher Appreciation Week in the Spring.
We don't know how it will all work yet, that's why we need more enthusiastic and creative parent volunteers to help figure out how we can safely show our support to our teachers and staff. Contact PALS if you are interested, pals@thefranklin.academy
