From the Senior Leadership Team – Term 2, Week 5

Kia Ora

We’re at the end of Week 5, and the weather has been absolutely stunning. The sun has kept everyone happy and relaxed. We’re nearing the end of our current Unit of Inquiry, and in the next newsletter, we will share a learner roundup of what has been learned. Our next unit, How The World Works, will be science-focused, with the Central Idea being ‘Exploring the Changes of Matter Allows us to Understand our World’.

Today, we have farewelled Mariska MacGibbon, who is leaving to take on new challenges at Willow Park Primary School. Mariska has been at TNIS for over 8 years and has been an integral part of the school's Kapa Haka group, a great Team Leader and an outstanding classroom teacher. She will be missed, but we wish her all the best in her new position. Taking over from Mariska will be Matt Cawkwell. Matt is an experienced intermediate school teacher and a former TNIS teacher. He will take over Room 14 for the rest of the year, and we are fortunate to have him to ensure a smooth transition.

As the weather gets colder, we remind everyone that sandals and socks are not allowed at TNIS. Our preference is for shoes and socks on wet days, to ensure comfort and greater safety in the school playground.

On Thursday, we’re having a non-uniform day for something very special. Recently, Mr Ramdhanie from Room 8 was very sick and needed CPR, which he got from some amazing firefighters who basically saved his life. So next Thursday, we’re going to be raising money to support the New Zealand Firefighters Welfare Society. This is a donation non-uniform day, which means you need to donate to wear non-uniform. You can do this through Kindo or learners can bring a gold coin on the day. This is a day to show our appreciation to the New Zealand Firefighters who do so much for us, and even helped save Mr Ramdhanie! So dig deep and donate.

A reminder of a few events coming up over the next two weeks.

  • On Friday, the 29th of May, TNIS will have a Teacher Only Day. These days have been provided for professional learning and planning to support the implementation of curriculum and assessment changes. Please note the school is NOT open for instruction on this day.

  • On Monday, the 1st of June, it will be King’s Birthday. This is a public holiday and school will be closed.

As always, we thank our parents and caregivers for their time and support in transporting learners for Zone Days and other events throughout the week. We know your time is valuable, and without your assistance, many of these events would not be possible.

Ngā mihi

Health Room Update

Our Health Room is available to provide short-term care and basic first aid during the school day. We are currently experiencing a high number of visits for follow-up and ongoing care, which we are not resourced to provide.

To ensure the Health Room remains available for learners who require immediate attention, please take a moment to review the information below with your child so they understand its purpose and appropriate use.

What the Health Room is for:

  • Treating minor injuries such as cuts, grazes, bumps, or nosebleeds

  • Providing basic first aid (e.g. bandages, ice packs, cleaning wounds)

  • Supporting students who feel unwell (e.g. headaches, nausea, fever, period pain) for a short period of rest

  • Assessing more serious injuries or illness and contacting caregivers or emergency services if required

  • Administering prescribed medication (with appropriate permission)

  • Supporting existing care plans (e.g. asthma, allergies, diabetes)

What the Health Room is not intended for:

  • Ongoing or repeated treatment (e.g. regular strapping for sprains)

  • Re-dressing injuries that have occurred at home or on previous days

  • Rehabilitation or continued medical support

  • Long-term supervision while awaiting collection

Once you have been contacted to collect your child, we are unable to supervise them for extended periods while you continue working. A travel time of up to one hour is considered reasonable. If you are unable to arrive within this timeframe, please arrange for an alternative adult to collect your child.

Thank you for your support in ensuring the Health Room remains available for learners who need urgent care.

ICAS 2026

ICAS is an online academic competition that gives students the opportunity to challenge their higher order thinking and problem-solving skills. TNIS will host 3 subjects in 2026: English, Mathematics and Science.

ICAS results are in-depth and meaningful, and ICAS evaluates student performance against other competition entrants across the state and nation. The data reveals student strengths and weaknesses and can help you recognise and support your child's academic journey.

Learn more about ICAS here: (icasassessments.com/products-icas/).

The Assessments Calendar with dates of purchase and the windows in which the text is sat can be found HERE.

These are purchased by parents directly through THIS LINK. If asked for our school PPS code it is: IEH393
