Dear Washington Families,

As we continue preparing for the start of the new school year, I wanted to share several updates regarding programming, staffing, and our current construction project. While next year will bring several changes, my commitment remains: providing every Washington student with a safe, welcoming, and engaging learning experience.

Welcoming Our First Grade ABA Program Welcoming Our First Grade ABA Program

This fall, Washington School will welcome our district's first-grade ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) program. This specialized program serves students with autism and other developmental disabilities through individualized instruction, structured routines, and targeted behavioral and communication supports that help students build academic, social, and independence skills. Designed to meet each child's unique needs, the program also fosters meaningful participation in our school community.

Washington School has a long tradition of being a caring and inclusive community, and I know our students, staff, and families will warmly welcome all new students and their families. The ABA program will be supported by a highly skilled team of special education teachers, paraprofessionals, related service providers, behavior specialists, and district administrators who work together to ensure every student receives the individualized support needed to thrive.

At the same time, we will continue to strengthen a school culture where every child feels a true sense of belonging. Throughout the year, students will participate in classroom and schoolwide activities that promote acceptance, empathy, and inclusion. Staff will engage in ongoing professional learning focused on inclusive practices and supporting diverse learners, while we intentionally create opportunities for students across classrooms to build friendships through shared learning experiences, assemblies, and schoolwide events.

Additional information about Applied Behavior Analysis is provided on the district's website.

Many families have asked about fourth grade class size for the upcoming school year.

Fourth grade will consist of three sections, with approximately 23 students in each classroom, commiserate with the previous year’s third grade sections. Washington's experienced fourth-grade teachers have a strong history of creating engaging, supportive learning environments for our students. They work collaboratively to provide meaningful instruction, build strong relationships with students, and ensure each child receives the attention and support needed to be successful both academically, and socially and emotionally.

As construction preparations continue, some instructional spaces will be temporarily repurposed.

I am working closely with our Visual and Performing Arts Supervisor, as well as our art and music teachers, to thoughtfully develop schedules and instructional plans that will ensure students continue to receive the high-quality art and music education that has long been a hallmark of the Westfield Public Schools. Students will continue to participate in instrumental music, performances, and rich creative experiences while we eagerly anticipate the completion of our new instructional spaces.

For the upcoming school year, the Art Room will continue to be utilized as a designed classroom for Art instruction while the Music Room will be repurposed as a classroom.

Sitework began in late June and is expected to be completed before students return in September. This work includes relocating the playground, resurfacing the basketball court, and completing drainage improvements necessary for the upcoming addition.

The building addition and renovation are scheduled to begin later this fall. Throughout construction, designated work areas will be securely fenced, and student and staff safety will remain our highest priority. Families will continue to be informed as milestones are reached.

Message for Students

A big thank you to everyone who has already sent me notes, pictures, drawings, and trivia! I have loved learning more about you and seeing all of your creativity.

If you haven't shared something yet, I'd love to hear from you! Tell me something about yourself - your favorite hobby, a special talent, a pet, a favorite book, or anything else you want to share. You can also ask me questions!

I'm especially excited to read your trivia submissions - what a fun way for me to learn from you! On the trivia form, there is also a space for you to fill in your favorite song so we can create a Washington School Playlist with all the music we love.
