Welcome to another great week Unicorn Families!

Thank you for an awesome first week back. We are so excited to be getting back into the swing of things! Our first 4-days was nothing short of amazing! We have planned for an exciting year of r"A"cing towards success! We have encountered some hiccups, but we have started our engines, and we are preparing to hit the gas really soon!!!

I would like to thank those parents that provided insight on student safety during dismissal. I really value your input in our school community. You are a vital piece of this puzzle, and I appreciate you taking the time out of your day to provide insight. Please know that safety is our top priority and we want to keep ALL students safe during and after the school day.

This week, our PTA will host our August PTA Meeting! We are hoping to see more of our families participate in these meetings. We want our families to have a voice in what's happening on our campus and what better way than to join out PTA! Please join us at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, in the media center. The pantry gate (47th St. and 13th Ave. N.) will be the point of entry and will open at 5:45p.m. for those joining us. Parents joining our PTA will receive 10 Parent Support Card points and 5 extra points for each meeting that they attend. In addition, your students will receive 5 extra PBIS points for each meeting that you attend. It's a win-win for both students and parents!

Parents, if you haven't already, please take a moment to complete and return the first day packet forms. It is imperative that we have updated information on each student. Focus is our main source of communication so it's imperative that we have updated contact information to keep you informed on what's happening on our campus.

Parents, please remember to complete your free/reduced lunch application regardless of you providing lunch or not for your child. There are many programs that could be offered to our school based on the percentage of students that qualify or not. Please help us take advantage of all supports by completing your free/reduced lunch application at www.myschoolapps.com. (link found below).

Our Annual Title 1 Meeting/Open House will be held on Wednesday August 26th at 5:30 p.m. in our cafeteria. Please come out to learn about all the magic that happens daily in your child's classroom. We hope to see each of you in attendance.

We are looking forward to an amazing school year! Thank you for your part in making this magic happen!

Magically yours,

Principal Dixon

Every student, every day. It's the Unicorn way!

Mark your calendars... Mark your calendars...

  • Students considered as "walkers" will no longer be held at the walker's gate to wait for a parent. Walkers are expected to walk home or to some prearranged location. If you need hand-to-hand exchange, please utilize our car circle where many adults are attending to children until parents arrive.
  • Parents, please don't surround the walkers gate, eliminating a safe walking space for our walkers. If you are waiting to walk with your student, we ask that you wait on the sidewalk away from the entry/exit. Thank you for keeping this gate clear to exit.
  • Mt. Vernon will continue to be a house school. Please read all about our house system in your child’s planner.
  • Fridays are House Spirit Days! We encourage students to wear their house shirts/colors on Fridays to show their house spirit. Students wearing their house shirt/color on Fridays will receive an extra house point. Purchasing new house shirts will be available really soon.
  • Student agendas will be used in grades K-5. Please make it a habit to check/sign (initial) your child’s agenda each day.
  • Our school website will be another communication tool, again this year. Each week, we will post the Parent Weekly Rainbow and other pertinent information on our website. Please plan on remaining informed by visiting our website frequently.

To ensure the safety of all, we ask that you adhere to the following safety protocols:

  • Our campus opens for students at 8:15 a.m. each day. Please don’t drop off or leave kids unattended prior to this time (8:15 a.m.).
  • All parents entering our campus must possess a valid, acceptable form of ID. No exceptions
  • All visitors must enter through the front office when visiting our campus.
  • For the safety of all, we ask that you please use the identified crosswalks when coming on campus. Please DO NOT walk through the car circle during arrival/dismissal. Thank you for helping us keep you safe.
  • Please use our car circle for pick-up and drop off unless your student walks to school. This is the safest and most efficient way for students to enter and exit the campus.
  • School starts promptly at 8:45. Please ensure that your child arrives in a timely manner to arrive to class on time.
  • Please encourage your students to keep our campus safe by reporting anything that they see or hear that can jeopardize the safety of our campus. Thank you for your support of keeping out campus safe.
