Primary Milkweed and Monarch Circle of Life Mixed Media Assemblage

K-1 students explored painting, printmaking, dry media practice and 3D construction in this close-up look at the circle of life. This project is a public awareness artwork to help support monarch and milkweed habitats.

Kudos to ALL SEMESTER 1 STUDENTS for your good work!

BRAVO! BRAVO! BRAVO!

Intermediate Circle of Life Pourquoi Myths, Maps & Mascaras...

4th and 5th graders created their own pourquoi graphic novels (using Maya codix construction), aerial maps and storyteller masks to enhance our Aztec creation myth study. This study was linked to our identity exploration, Indigenous folk art and Día de los Muertos' circle of life traditions.

In addition, these mixed-media extravaganzas were celebratory odes to Lion King (in Chicago:))) and Julie Taymor's fantastic puppets, masks, automata and ability to create the impossible...:)

Middle School Printmaking Extraordinaire...à la Posada's Workshop!

7th graders created HUGE multi-step collagraph prints to honor el Día de los Muertos. Students had to STAND on their plates in order to print them! These artworks acted as a large-scale mural to share with our community at our all-school exhibit.

K-7th grade students also created 3D identity vessels and Wildcat identity portraits. Students designed happy calaveras of all sorts, practiced Surrealist imagining and a designed a variety of printed works---potato prints and flower triptychs to name a few...:)

SEMESTER 2 | JEANNE GANG and GREEN DESIGN! SEMESTER 2 | JEANNE GANG and GREEN DESIGN!

Jeanne Gang explains her design intent for Chicago's Vista skyscraper in new video

Hello Everyone!

Happy 2023!

“The beginning is always today.”
– Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley

Throughout Semester 2, students will be looking at Jeanne Gang's nuanced blend of art and science in 3D construction. Ms. Gang is a Chicago native, female virtuoso and incredible Changemaker. Students will look at her work throughout Chicago and will practice different ways to utilize GREEN design in their constructions. We will be studying and blending the lines of conventional and contemporary art as we create public installations and personal artworks.

We will also be looking at Chicago's rich history and potential in A NEW Century of Progress: 2023-2123...We will look at the Chicago's Northerly Island as the site for the 1933's World's Fair and the Chicago motto: I Will! More information will be shared as we unpack our study. HOORAY!

Our projects will include working on a mural, mosaic tiles, landscape and 3D architecture---but we begin with Lunar New Year! 2023 is the Year of the Water Rabbit and we plan to launch our study of structure and form with kinetic lights and kites!

We are bringing back a beloved favorite--- COMMUNITY MAKER WEEK! Please let me know if you would like to share how you are a MAKER or CREATIVE (career, vocation or both:)) with our children. Please email me, alvecchioni@cps.edu

Global Warming Tempestry

This is a Tempestry Project bulletin board. It is an example of creating new ways to think about old problems. This interactive bulletin board demonstrates an attempt to make learning visible.

It demonstrates the impact of fossil fuel usage on global temperatures since the beginning of time. The warm colors demonstrate the speedy rise in overall temperatures since we began using fossil fuels. Data shows that global temperatures are constantly rising since the Industrial Revolution. We will be discussing this fact as we create our NEW Century of Progress Green Technology designs this spring!

Start saving your cardboard now...:))

Thanks to Ms. Rajska for teaching me about the Tempestry Project! We will be creating a variety of Tempestries this semester to demonstrate our learning! Keep a lookout;))!
