Learning Through Play
Pouring Station
Materials needed:
Fill the bin with a shallow amount of water. Encourage the child to scoop, pour, and transfer water using the cups and funnels. Talk about concepts like "full," "empty," "more," and "less."
Fine motor skills: Pouring and scooping
How can I make this activity more accessible?:
- For children with sensory sensitivities, you may need to adjust the temperature of the water to find what is "just right."
- Toddlers are still working on their fine motor skills so providing spoons of various sizes can be helpful (toddler-size spoons along with teaspoons and utensils from your kitchen drawers)
A Shape Scavenger Hunt
Materials Needed:
Paper to make shape cards (circle, square, triangle, etc.).
Alternative: use the printout attached at the bottom of this newsletter
Basket or bag
Instructions: Draw shapes onto the paper and have your child cut them out. Show the child a shape card and ask them to find objects around the room or outside that match the shape. Collect the objects and discuss them.
What skills will children learn from this activity?
Fine Motor Skills: Scissor skills
Cognitive Skills: Shape recognition, spatial awareness, problem-solving.
How can I make this activity more accessible?
Use tactile (touch) shape cards for children with visual impairments. For example, cut out and apply brightly felt to the shape. Adding this fuzzy feature to the shape can make learning about shapes more fun for all preschoolers.
