Showcase a School

Stillson Elementary School

Jenny Sarauer, Stillson Principal; Laura Teunge, 1st grade teacher; and Lindy Pischer, 5th grade teacher, presented on the importance of student and staff connection. Stillson has been intentional in providing opportunities for students to connect with all-school celebrations, a kindness chalk day, having a school song, etc. Happy Hives and Classroom Buddies are also two formal ways that students are connecting with each other at Stillson.

  • Happy Hives: Students are put into small groups with students from other grades and classes that are led by two adults. Students remain in their same Happy Hive until the end of 5th grade. The Happy Hives are planned bi-monthly and include “just-for-fun” types of activities. Many of the planned activities are meant to do something kind for others.
    • Decorated coffee sleeves for 4:30AM
    • Decorated bags for Meals on Wheels
    • Created individual squares that were put together to make an all-school “quilt”
    • Valentine’s Day STEM activity to build the tallest toothpick and marshmallow tower
  • Classroom Buddies: Two classrooms are paired with one another (ex: 2nd and 5th grade) to do an educational activity. Students have shared that they enjoy reading to younger kids and like to get to know other kids and teachers.

Staff connection is also a priority at Stillson. Staff have been intentional about having pod gatherings monthly, filling out positive thank you cards for each other, and forming clubs (Foodies Club, Fantasy Football, Bookish Banter, etc.). This year staff also held a rock-paper-scissors tournament. Students enjoyed seeing the staff have fun together at school too; click here for more information.
