Senior of the Week

Henry Cermeno Donis was nominated by his counselor, Mr. Roach. "Henry is such a joy to work with, and I'm honored to be his counselor. Every interaction that I have with Henry is incredibly positive. He is a hard worker in the classroom, and I'm very proud of how much progress he has made since starting at Rowland. He's only been at RHS for less than a year, and he has grown so much. As an English learner, school can often be difficult at times, but Henry works through every challenge and is doing amazing. He is a great role model for his peers. Congratulations, Henry!"

Athlete of the Week

Jacob Juarez was nominated by his cross-country coach Mr. Ramirez. "After having graduated 7 of the top 10 runners, the boys Cross Country team was going to rebuild and focus on next year. That is until Jacob Juarez, our athlete of the week for cross country, absolutely killed it all summer by averaging 50 miles a week and never missing a day of practice. During League Finals, he finished as the 2nd best runner in the Valle Vista league by running 16:09 on a hilly 3-mile course and finishing First Team all league and MVP Runner Up. The future is bright for Jacob."

IB English IB English

Huzzah! This December, Mr. Falk's IB juniors will bring one of the Bard's most famous plays to life by performing scenes from Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Macbeth. Each performance will take place live, and students will wear costumes of their own design, bring props, and memorize lines. They can choose to work with their peers in collaborative groups or fortify their personal resolve to perform a soliloquy. This exciting project will act as the culmination to a five-week unit spent reading, analyzing, and writing about one of the most iconic tragedies ever written in the English language and will allow students to showcase their understanding in an active and creative format worthy of Shakespeare's approval.

Across the hall from Mr. Falk, in the R-Building, Mr. Sabbagh's seniors are working in groups to closely interpret and modernize lines from Milton's Paradise Lost. Each group will create a Google Slide that provides an analysis of the lines assigned and incorporates images to provide visuals of the text. To expand beyond the text, students will need to discuss which vices humans suffer from the most and how society deals with these vices. In practicing their synthesis skills, students will need to accurately cite sources that broaden their understanding.

Student Success is the English Department Goal! Student Success is the English Department Goal!

As the first semester is quickly coming to a close, English teachers are preparing for the second semester and the assessments - state, AP, and IB testing. The English Department looks forward to sharing more from the classroom, but also student achievement and success!
