What Are Good Grades? | MVHS, Explained — Episode 4

What does it really mean to be a “good student” at Mountain Vista High School?

In this episode of MVHS, Explained, we take a closer look at grades, academic progress, and what students and families should understand about success in high school. We explain how grades connect to learning, growth, graduation progress, and future opportunities, and why one number or letter does not tell the whole story.

Whether you are a student trying to understand expectations, a family member supporting a student, or someone who wants to better understand how academic success works at MVHS, this episode provides a clear starting point.

🇯🇵 Discover Japan in Summer 2028!

In the summer of 2028, Mrs. Balliet and Mr. Hall will be leading an unforgettable trip to Japan!

Experience the incredible contrasts this fascinating country has to offer: ancient temples surrounded by futuristic skyscrapers; peaceful Zen gardens next to fully immersive arcades; and people dressed in traditional kimonos walking alongside someone who looks like they just stepped out of the future.

See all of this—and so much more—on this custom-built adventure through Japan.

These trips always sell out quickly, so if you're interested, come talk to Mrs. Balliet or Mr. Hall and make sure to attend the online meeting on Thursday, September 10, at 7:00 p.m.

MVHS Book Club Update

Based on member requests, we've combined our MVHS Book Club with the Somewhat Virtual Book Club (SWVBC)! Students will connect online with high school book clubs nationwide (and beyond!) and even host guest author visits.

Schedule:

  • Wednesday 9/10 (11:30 AM / 4th Period): Virtual group meeting with partner schools & authors. Don't worry if you cannot make this meeting. Inquire in the library if you are doing well in your 4th period class and we can work with your teacher to excuse you.

  • Thursday 9/11: In-person gathering just for MVHS students to debrief and discuss.

First Read: Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Boulley

Kick off the year with this #1 New York Times bestselling YA thriller! An immersive, high-stakes story following eighteen-year-old Daunis Fontaine as she goes undercover to investigate a deadly new drug threatening her Native community. Packed with suspense, complex identity, and Ojibwe culture, it's a compelling mystery your student won't want to miss.

Encourage your student to drop by the library to grab a copy and join the conversation!

Chrombook/Technology Update 💻

Chromebooks

Freshmen must swap last year's 8th grade device in for a new Chromebook. Please stop by the library to exchange your device if you still have an older model.

As always, if you have technology questions, feel free to pop into the library. We are happy to assist.

Protect Your Student’s Chromebook with Safeware Insurance

Accidents happen. For $25–$36 per year, depending on the Chromebook model, families can purchase Safeware Chromebook insurance to help cover accidental damage such as cracked screens, drops, and liquid spills. Covered repairs have no deductibles or service fees.

How it works

  • Purchase coverage from Safeware using district ID DIST0132

  • If damage happens, there is no claim for families to file

  • Bring the Chromebook to the library at your student’s school

  • TSD works directly with Safeware to handle the repair

Without insurance, repair costs can add up quickly, and full device replacement may cost $200–$300. Learn more about repair costs on TSD’s website.

Safeware does not cover lost devices or deliberate damage.

Thompson Education Foundation Backpacks

Thompson Education Foundation's Help Kids Succeed school supply program provided almost 1,600 supply-filled backpacks for our economically vulnerable students this year.

Families should visit the school in which they are registered to receive a backpack. For example, if a requesting family has two students, one in 4th grade and one in 9th grade, they would need to visit both their registered elementary school and high school to receive backpacks. Supplies are different for elementary/middle/high school levels.
