A Note from Mrs. Pitts
From Our Central Office Team...
Dear SAU 50 Families,
As we are being informed about families who have had a change in residency but may not be aware of the process and the law regarding informing the school of this change, we would like to remind families about the residency requirements for enrollment in SAU 50 schools, as defined by RSA 193:12:
A student's legal residence is determined as follows:
The legal residence of a minor is where their parent(s) reside.
If parents live apart and are not divorced, the child’s residence is with the parent they live with.
If parents share joint custody through a divorce decree, the child’s residence is with the parent they live with.
In cases where a family owns properties both within and outside of the district, residence is defined by where the child is living (i.e. sleeps at night).
If a parent has been awarded sole or primary physical custody through a court order or parenting plan, the child’s legal residence is with that parent. If that parent lives outside New Hampshire, the child does not have residency in NH and is not eligible for SAU 50 enrollment.
If a child is under the legal guardianship of a court-appointed guardian, their legal residence is with that guardian. However, guardianship cannot be established solely for the purpose of attending school in a different district.
Acceptable proof of residency can include current utility bills, lease agreements, mortgage statements, or other official mail showing the address. A notarized residency affidavit is also acceptable. Families who have had a change in residency or custody status should notify their child's school as soon as possible to ensure accurate enrollment records. If you have any questions regarding residency requirements, please refer to Rye board policies JFA, JFAA, and JFAB or contact the SAU 50 central office for clarification.
Thank you for your cooperation in maintaining accurate residency records.
Sincerely,
SAU 50 Administration
Spring Time is Here!
I have learned from much experience that as we approach the spring, we all need to be more on our toes, as the weather gets nicer, friendships can be tested and students can get itchy as they think about the summer and moving on from their current class and teacher, which can cause some big feelings. Since we are a team, here are a few simple ways you might be able to support our RES staff in the coming months.
-Eliminate possible distractions
Students have been coming to school with an increasing number of objects, toys, personal sports equipment, jewelry , purses and other items that are becoming an extra management item for our teachers. Please send children to school with only what they need, unless the teacher has a different plan on a given day. This is more helpful than you know.
-Shoes
Children are beginning to wear slip ons and heels to school on PE and non-PE days. Students do a lot of running, climbing and outdoor activity every day. Please ensure your child is wearing sneakers on PE days, sensible shoes on outdoor days and "safe" shoes for recess.
-Water
Please send water or water bottles only during the school day. Students can bring juices and other drinks for lunch but we cannot have other drinks in classrooms throughout the day as they can spill and that is not fun.
-Reach Out
If you are struggling with a challenge your child has been facing at school, please do not hold it in and think you cannot reach out. We are here and want to support you in the last few months to ensure the most successful end to the school year!
NH SAS Testing Grades 3 and 4
Each year, students in grades 3 through 8 participate in the New Hampshire Statewide
Assessment System (NH SAS). Title I, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, as amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), Section 1111(b)(2) and New Hampshire Law, RSA 193-C:6 requires each school district in the State to implement a set of high-quality academic assessments that includes, at a minimum, assessments in mathematics, reading/language arts and science to be administered in each of grades 3-8; and in science not less than once during grades 3-5 and grades 6-9. Furthermore, ESSA sections 1111(b)(2)(B) require State assessments to be the “same academic assessments used to measure the
achievement of all public elementary school and secondary school students in the State,”
and provide for the participation in such assessments to all students.
Assessment State assessments are an important part of a student’s core educational program. They provide an evaluation of student mastery of content and skills in various academic areas,
serve as one tool for measuring the degree to which students are on track to graduate high school and be college- and career-ready, and help inform future instruction in the classroom. Along with student work on classroom assignments, projects, essays, and local assessments, state assessment results give teachers and you, the parents, important information about where students are on their path toward academic success.
Exemption:
You are allowed to exempt your child from participation in the state assessment
(permitted in RSA 193-C:6) You must complete and submit an exemption form. Please
contact your child’s school to receive a copy of the exemption form. Please understand,
if you choose to exempt your child from the assessment, no scores or summary of
individual student performance, based on the statewide assessment, will be provided to
you or your student.
Students results for the NH SAS (reading/writing, mathematics and science) are generally
available upon the student completing the test. Schools will send a student’s Individual
Score Report home before the end of the school year. If you prefer to see the results
once your child completes the assessment, please contact the school principal.
The NH Department of Education has developed a comprehensive website
https://nh.portal.cambiumast.com/families.html that is available to everyone. There are
resources and information about the test for parents and students.
If you have questions, please contact your child’s classroom teacher or school principal.
OT Month!
April is Occupational therapy (OT) month! In the spirit of learning more about OT, there are a few handouts attached. In summary, OT in the school setting is a related service that helps students develop the skills needed for academic success, such as fine motor coordination, visual motor, self-regulation, sensory processing, and daily life tasks. The focus is on helping children access meaningful occupations (e.g., school, play, life skills, etc). :)

Kids Heart Challenge: THANK YOU!
Congratulations to the fourth grade students for completing the Kids Heart Challenge! This is the 25th year that RES has participated in this program!
Eight students from RES chose to collect donations for the American Heart Association raising a total of $1, 584.17. Riley Morton and Emmett Ziska were the top two fundraisers. Thank you to everyone who participated! Our school earns a $300 gift certificate for every $1,000 dollars raised. Thank you gifts for students who collected donations will be distributed as soon as they arrive.
Leadership Survey
I am getting VERY helpful feedback but I have 20 respondents so far. I am aiming for 30!!! I would really LOVE if you could take some time to fill out this survey, it would help me to reflect on my practice and support our students, families and staff to the best of my ability. I promise to share the results with the community and have already processed a few shifts we can make to support your feedback.

CHILD FIND
School districts are responsible to actively seek out families who may have children with disabilities and require special education. Our Preschool team will hold the second screening on April 4, 2025. Notification of the screenings was included in weekly school newsletters as well as mailed to local preschools, community service agencies, and pediatrician offices.
Lunch in Our Caf
We invite one family member at a time to have lunch with their child(ren) but this is very optional and we don't want families to feel pressured to attend. This is an occasional event as we do want children to build independence and social skills in the cafeteria, a perfect time for this!
- Email resoffice@sau50.org if you would like to attend with the date/time. It is important to anticipate who will be in the building. We love these opportunities for students and their family members but we will always put safety first.
- Adults must bring their own lunch and can bring lunch for their own child.
- We do have a focus during this time...eating for energy and brain power!
- Family members must meet the child in the cafeteria and leave from the cafeteria.
- Days for family visits are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. We do not have lunch visitors on Fridays.
- Lunch times are:
Kindergarten-11:45-12:10
First Grade-12:10-12:35
Second Grade-12:10-12:35
Third Grade- 11:15-11:40
Fourth Grade-11:15-11:40
Photo Highlights: Learning ABout Water Filtration, Take 2!
Fourth grade students had the pleasure of working with UNH Professor and Environmental Engineer Dr. James Malley last Friday, March 21. Thank you Dr. Malley!
Students created a water filtration system using rocks, fine sand, coarse sand and gac. All students participate in this hands on experiment. Some students created the dirty water, others created the filter, and some helped add things to the water to clarify it as well as read the numbers from the machine after the water had been filtered.
This presentation involved health, outdoor education and steam. A global connection was made when students were shown a video of Dr. Malley and some graduate students traveled to The Dominican Republic, a Spanish speaking country, to make a water filtration system for a school.
Other Photos This Week!
RJH Students Teach About Nutrition
Anna and Callie from RJH (former RES students) came back to teach our third graders about health in nutrition during their world language/health classes. Mrs. Warden and Mrs. Piper were so impressed with their speaking skills and knowledge about nutrition. Merci beaucoup!
Library Fun!
In 2nd grade, we read John Himmelman’s PIGS TO THE RESCUE. Everyone on the farm has a problem–but when the pigs try to help, they only make it worse. Students then wrote and illustrated their own “pigs to the rescue” page.
Cooperation at its Finest!
Some second grade boys have been working for WEEKS on building their own home with a fence near the woods at recess. The RES staff has been watching this in awe and yesterday, the AMAZING Mrs. Uliano brought some seeds so they could plant a mini garden. The boys ran up so excitedly when they were done and said, "Can we have a pom pom for cooperation?" This is our word of the month and YES, they got 6!
