An Easter Message from Chaplain Kates
“They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” Mary said, not knowing it was him. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him” Jesus said to her, “Mary!” John 20: 15-16
I frequently ask our students how joy and sadness can exist at the same time. Their answers are often simple, yet deeply profound: “My dog died, but I know they are with my grandfather in heaven.” “When a friend is sad because they fell down, I give them a hug and ask them to play.” “I miss my grandmother, but I know she is no longer suffering.” Many of them seem to understand this truth inherently.
We can see evidence of this paradox woven throughout creation and in the life cycles of living things. One well-known illustration comes from The Lion King, when Mufasa explains that “upon death, our bodies become the grass that feeds the antelope,” reminding us that all living things are connected in a great circle of life.
Easter invites us to see this truth even more clearly. The risen Christ, conquering death, offers not only the promise of eternal life, but also the gift of abundant life here and now. There will be struggle and pain—this is certain—but there will also be hope, renewal, and new life. Scripture is filled with reminders of God’s desire for abundance for His people, and the resurrection stands as the clearest expression of that promise.
We are promised joy. Even in the midst of sorrow and despair, joy is present. Look for signs of new life here on earth—they are there. You may not recognize them at first or even second glance, but like Mary Magdalene, you will find them.

Chapel Talks Now Available to Stream
We are proud to share that St. Luke’s chapel talks are now available on our podcast, Our View from the Hilltop. These student-led reflections offer a meaningful glimpse into the hearts and minds of our learners—what they value, what they’ve discovered, and how they see the world around them. Rooted in our Episcopal identity and guided by the St. Luke’s Way—Scholarship, Citizenship, and Leadership—each talk is a powerful expression of a student who is known, loved, and challenged.
We invite every member of the St. Luke's community to listen in. These voices tell the story of a school where confidence starts early, grows intentionally, and is ultimately shared with courage.
The Chapel Talks are published in batches, with the first episode featuring Andrea, Emma, and Eva.

Exploratory Robotics Enrichment Interest Form
Exploratory Robotics at St. Luke's is a fun and engaging introduction to robotics for students in grades 2nd-4th. It’s a great first step where students begin building foundational skills in engineering, programming, and documenting their work. Along the way, they’ll explore problem-solving, collaboration, project management, and critical thinking in a supportive environment. Students who exhibit strong commitment and abilities may be invited to join the competitive program in the future.
Parents, you will still need to sign up for Exploratory Robotics when enrichment classes launch for the fall. Returning competitive students do not need to reply, however, any middle school students who are not currently in competitive robotics, but wish to be, can reach out to Matt Robinson at mrobinson@sles-sa.org
