Advent is Here

Just 3 days after Thanksgiving we start the move toward Christmas. There are so many ways to mark, worship, relish and sink into the season. At Shalem, we mind the breath God gifted us, the bodily temples of the Spirit and God’s Word, weaving them together in a practice that gives us space to listen, ponder, pray and stretch / search our body, mind, soul and heart. The heart of the practice is time with Jesus. A holy yoga may seem unorthodox but God is constantly co-creating with his people. It’s worth noting this doesn’t replace church or other spiritual obligations or practices - but it does give outlet to worship in a way we might crave…..silence, stillness, stretching, opening, giving, receiving - all in the name of Jesus who we fix our gaze.

A quote from Thomas Ryan, a modern contemplative, sums up a current challenge I hear often: “As long as our mind machine keeps spinning out millions of thoughts and words, our….heart remains undeveloped.” Yes, my heart longs for time with God when I’m not in the results business - Can I show up in my mess, offering my breath, body, soul and heart? Can I offer the practice to God that he will do with me what he wills. I practice this on the mat. We can take time on our mat to challenge our physical temples that house the Holy Spirit and we can conversely take a posture of ponder, stillness and reverence to spend time with the Creator. To listen, to love, to relish, to worship, to sink into the unknown. “Glorify God in your body” 1Cor. 6:20. “We are the intimate habitat of God,” says Ryan. Let us explore and revere this supernatural, mind-blowing truth. It’s Christmas. Believe the miracle. Believe the truth that is beyond our understanding. “The same glory you gave me, I gave them, So they’ll be as unified and together as we are - I in them and you in me…..giving the godless world evidence that you’ve sent me and loved them In the same way you’ve loved me.” John 17:23 MSG. Unity, love, a home for God inside….and, paramount, a way to life-eternal: Christmas.
