Happy December!
As we come to the end of the first semester of school, the activity calendar is full for everyone. With increased extra curricular activities, family obligations, and well, seasonal allergies and colds, student attendance starts to become a significant problem for many students. As I've shared previously, students are limited on the amount of time they can miss class without having an extenuating circumstance as classified by the state. If they exceed 9 absences in a semester in any given class, they will be denied credit for the class even if they have passed the class for that semester. If at all possible, please make sure your student is at school.
We also have semester exams the week of December 16th. Semester exams are weighted at 20% of a student's semester grade and being here to take the exam is a priority. Teachers will be reviewing material with students up to exam day and providing that additional support as needed to make sure students are successful on that exam. These next few weeks are valuable weeks for students whose grades are not quite where they would like them to be. This is the time to "lock in" and prioritize any missing work and COMMUNICATE with teachers about missing work. When I review teacher gradebooks, the number 1 thing I see when I see a student not being successful is missing work and low test grades. When I talk with the teacher about the student and ask the teacher how often the student has come in for tutoring or has talked with him/her about the missing work or how they have taken ownership for their learning, not many have taken the opportunities available to them.

Excessive Absences Can Cost Your Student Credit for a Class
If your student is absent, it's important to submit any documentation for absences to TR Attendance Office. Your student should drop off all notes to the TR Attendance office located in the main foyer of the TR main building. Your doctor can fax a note directly to the office, the fax number is 210-650-1291. Documentation can also be emailed to the attendance clerk, Ms. Kimberly Hulsey, khulse@neisd.net. Attendance Matters All Day Everyday!
If you have an unexcused absence, the classroom teacher does not have to award full credit for make up work. The teacher can deduct up to 20% of the final grade according to NEISD grading policy. So, turn in those notes!
