Supporting ELs with Technology
Tech Tip Tuesday (April 16, 2024)
Forget a one-size-fits-all approach! English Learners (ELs) are a vibrant tapestry of students, each with unique backgrounds and needs for learning English. This diversity can be both a challenge and a rewarding opportunity for educators to tailor their instruction.
Try out a way to improve instruction for all students in your class, not just those learning the complex and (usually) nonsensical English language.
Content
Finding quality content with accurate and coherent translations can be difficult, but thankfully many primary and supplementary content providers have translations for many different languages to meet the growing needs of ELs.
Don't have one?
Use MagicSchool AI's Text Translator tool! It can help you retain meaning and a high level of academic complexity. Additionally, any response created by any of their tools can translated into any widely spoken language from Albanian to Vietnamese!
Champion
Life goes on after school. Some days I wish it wouldn't, and other days, the door can't close fast enough.
The same happens for ELs, and as teachers, preparing them to champion their own needs is one of the best ways we can empower them academically. Teach students explicitly how to use these skills to enable them for academic success!
Connect
Working on oracy matters for English learners, and you want to focus on engaging them physically, linguistically, cognitively and socially when planning instruction for inclusion.
Try out an activity from Flip or Seesaw with specific language skills to work on both language skills for ELs and for those crucial Speaking & Listening skills in CCSS!
