Boulevard Weekly Newsletter
1 person 1% Better Every Day
📆 Principal's Corner
Greetings Boulevard Families,
As we wrap up another wonderful week at Boulevard, we are excited to share a glimpse into the learning, growth, and connections happening throughout our school. Our scholars continue to work hard, build relationships, and grow as learners each day.
📚 A Peek at Learning
Kindergarten Math!
Our Kindergarteners have been hard at work building strong math foundations each day! During our daily routines, students are diving into hands-on learning, counting, and comparing quantities.
Here is a look at what our young mathematicians have been exploring:
Calendar & Weather Math: Students track daily weather data and use comparison vocabulary like "greater than," "less than," and "equal to" to analyze their charts.
Ten-Frames & Addition: Through interactive ten-frame activities, children are learning how to compose and decompose numbers. They practice creating and repeating addition equations like $0+5=5$ and $4+1=5$ using kinesthetic strategies like chin-tapping and air-finger tracing.
Number Formation & Self-Reflection: Whiteboard practice is filled with engaging number rhymes! Students learn stroke mechanics—like making a "candy cane with a shoe" to write the number 2—and practice self-evaluating their work by circling their best-written number.
💡 Parent Tip
Compare Everyday Items: Ask your child to compare objects around the house using math words. For example: "Are there more red apples or green apples on the counter? Is the number of forks greater than or equal to the number of spoons?"
🔬 3rd Grade Science Learning Lab Spotlight
Our third-grade STEM scholars are learning how scientists collect, record, and analyze data! Students participated in a hands-on pencil-roll investigation where they explored how force affects motion. Students worked with partners to roll pencils into numbered zones, recorded their results, compared data, and calculated totals. They are also building their STEM vocabulary, including the word analyze, which means to look closely at information and observations to learn more.
💡 Parent Tip
Ask your child: “What happened when you used more or less force? What did your data tell you?” Encourage them to explain their answer using evidence from their investigation.
🎵 Music Learning Spotlight
Our scholars are exploring music through listening, singing, movement, and instruments! Students listened to popular music from the 1990s and practiced identifying tempo, or the speed of music. They are learning Italian music vocabulary such as presto for fast, moderato for medium, and largo for slow. Students are also learning about musical styles such as a cappella and medleys while connecting music to singing, movement, and everyday experiences. Students are using their creativity to adapt familiar songs and connect music to their own lives.
💡 Parent Tip
Listen to a song together and ask your child: “Is the tempo presto, moderato, or largo? What do you hear that makes you think that?” See if your child can teach you the Italian music vocabulary they are learning at school.

Directora Mahoney-Curry

🔧 The Engineering Design Process Engineers are problem-solvers! They use a creative process to identify problems, develop ideas, build solutions, test their designs, and make improvements. Great engineers know that mistakes are part of the process! 1. 💭 ASK — What is the problem? Start by identifying the problem you want to solve or the goal you want to achieve. Ask questions such as: What problem am I trying to solve? What do I need to make or change? Who will use my design? What are the requirements and limitations? 2. 💡 IMAGINE — What could I create? Let your creativity take over! Brainstorm as many possible solutions as you can. Think big, think differently, and remember—there are no bad ideas during brainstorming! 3. 📐 PLAN — How will I build it? Choose your best idea and create a drawing, diagram, or blueprint of your design. Think carefully about how your design will work and make a list of the materials you will need. 4. 🛠️ CREATE — Build your solution! Now it’s time to bring your idea to life! Students in grades 4 and 5 worked together to build the tallest balloon tower using their creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. Teams put their plans into action as they worked to create a tower that was both tall and stable. 5. 🧪 TEST — Does it work? Put your design to the test! Students tested their balloon towers and observed what worked—and what didn’t. They used what they discovered to think about how their designs could be improved. 6. 🔄 IMPROVE — How can I make it better? Engineers rarely get everything right the first time. Use what you learned from testing to make changes to your design. Redesign, rebuild, and test again! 📚 STEM Reading Extension The learning continued beyond the building challenge! Students also read about balloon animals, making connections between reading, engineering, creativity, and design. They explored how balloons can be transformed into different shapes and structures while thinking about the problem-solving and skills involved in creating them. Engineering is not about getting it perfect the first time. It's about collaborating, learning from challenges, solving problems, and making your design better!
