COLEBROOK SCHOOL
MAY NEWSLETTER
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Families,
As we enter the final stretch of the school year, it is wonderful to reflect on how much our students have grown. A special shout-out to our third graders, who recently completed both their state-level reading and math assessments. We are incredibly proud of the effort, focus, and perseverance they demonstrated throughout the testing process.
With spring’s arrival, we are enjoying brighter mornings and opportunities for outdoor fun. Whether it’s after-school play at the park, family walks, or simply enjoying a bit of fresh air, this time of year brings renewed energy. At school, students are making the most of outdoor recess whenever possible – sometimes still bundled up, but happy to be out and moving! As we look ahead, I’d like to share some important information about student devices over the summer and how we support students as they transition into the next grade level.
SUMMER PLANS FOR STUDENT DEVICES
Whenever possible, students will keep their school-issued laptops and chargers over the summer. This allows continued access to learning and enrichment resources, including online reading materials.
Students completing kindergarten this year will return their devices and chargers to their classrooms at the end of the school year. New devices will be distributed through a central deployment process at the beginning of first grade. Kindergarten students participating in Extended School Year or Summer Lab programs will be provided loaner devices for program use.
Students completing first, second, and third grade will keep their laptops and chargers through the end of fourth grade, including summers.
Students leaving the district at the end of the school year may return devices to their school on the last day of classes. Students moving over the summer may return devices to the District Office, 321 List Ave., by Aug. 30, 2026.
SUPPORTING TRANSITIONS TO THE NEXT GRADE
Helping students feel comfortable and confident as they move to the next grade is a priority across our district. While some transitions are more structured, all students take part in both informal and formal activities toward the end of the school year.
Teachers in first, second, and third grade collaborate by visiting classrooms or welcoming students into their future grade-level spaces. During these visits, teachers intentionally connect with students they may have the following year.
Third-grade students will have the opportunity to visit either Rogers or Iroquois middle schools through an in-person tour. Preparations often include writing questions for fourth-grade staff and students. Visits typically feature classroom videos, informal meet-and-greets, and discussions about clubs, activities, homework expectations, and lockers.
As the school year draws to a close, I look forward to celebrating our students’ accomplishments and milestones alongside you. Thank you for your continued partnership and support.
Thank you for your partnership,
Jennifer DeWitz

Tick Safety Reminder for Families
With warmer weather, students are spending more time outdoors, ticks are more active. Ticks live in grassy and wooded areas and can carry illnesses, such as Lyme disease.
Help protect your child by:
Use insect repellent (follow label directions)
Wear long sleeves and pants in grassy or wooded areas
Stay on cleared paths
After outdoor activities:
Check your child daily for ticks (especially scalp, behind ears, under arms behind knees and waist)
Shower soon after coming indoors when possible
If you find a tick:
Remove it promptly with tweezers
Clean the area with soap and water
Watch for symptoms like rash, fever, or fatigue
If you notice any concerning symptoms, contact your child’s healthcare provider. Thank you for keeping students safe and healthy this season!
Instructional Technology Plan
Through the collaborative work of the West Irondequoit Technology Advisory Committee and the Office of Instruction, West Irondequoit has updated and submitted our 2026–2029 Instructional Technology Plan to the New York State Education Department (NYSED).
The updated plan builds on the goals of our 2022–2025 Instructional Technology Plan and aligns with the WICSD Strategic Plan, Portrait of the Graduate, and Professional Learning Plan. Many of our priorities remain consistent, with a continued focus on the intentional and strategic use of instructional technology, responsible and ethical use of artificial intelligence, and the development of a technology infrastructure that supports modern instructional and organizational needs. The plan also emphasizes ongoing professional learning to support high-quality instruction for all students.
The full Instructional Technology Plan is available on the West Irondequoit website via this link. Click the Technology Plan blue button.

Stay in the loop!
Parents/guardians,
Do you:
Have a new cell/work phone number or email?
Switched phone carriers recently?
Need to update your emergency contacts?
Please keep us informed of any changes to numbers or emergency contact info. Update it directly in the Infinite Campus Portal or send a note with your child.
WHY YOUR MOBILE NUMBER IS CRITICAL
Our system does NOT default if you have just one field filled (Home/Work/Mobile). Best practice: Whatever number you receive calls on, put that in the HOME field; for text messages, put that number in the MOBILE field even if the same number.
If your mobile number is not in the correct field, you will not receive text messages from our school/district for emergencies (such as school closings in winter months).
WICPTSA FUN RUN FUNDRAISER!
West Irondequoit Central PTSA is hosting a Color-a-Thon Fun Run at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 6 at Irondequoit HS. It’s open to all West Irondequoit students K-12 and the registration deadline is May 22 via this link: donate.schoolathon.org. Please use your school’s unique registration code in the graphic. Families are welcome to run but do not need to register/fundraise. What is a Color-a-Thon Fun Run?
This non-competitive run is 1.8 miles but there are a variety of distances to support all ages and abilities. Throughout the course, participants are showered with eco-friendly colored chalk. The Color Blast Dust is safe, non-toxic and washable. The powder is a non-toxic, non-rash-inducing colored corn starch. For the fundraising part, students must create a profile, then share their donation page with family and friends to solicit donations. The minimum donation is $30 but the more the students raise, the more prizes they can win! The event starts at 11 AM with check-in starting at 10 a.m.
