Ms. Chalk Talks About Volcanoes

There was molten lava bubbling down mountainsides and fiery gases clouding the skies in Ms. Chalk's 4th grade class on Monday, February 10th. Second graders had come to learn about volcanoes, and they were not disappointed. For several weeks, 4th grade students had been learning about volcanoes in science. Each student chose to do a presentation of their research in the form of a brochure, a slide show, or a video. Every project was complete with vibrant colors and vivid pictures of different types of volcanoes in their various stages, from dormant to light crackling eruptions. Cameron is pictured with his slide show as he teaches 2nd grader Nicholas about different kinds of volcanoes. (Click here to see all the great projects 4th graders did.)

SPREAD A LITTLE KINDNESS

By Kamden Blackburn

On February 21, 6th grade students brought kindness to all grades of the school. Hopefully, for students below 6th grade, they will remember how 6th graders taught them to be kind to others. Kindness is a good thing in this world and the 6th graders believed that they should teach it to everyone else. Click here to see the pictures of 6th grade sharing slide shows and reading stories to MES.

A Teaching Moment

What is the best way to learn to read the word "sax"? By playing a saxophone of course! Who knew Mr. Zugelter had this very special talent? Mr. Z's kindergartners now know, and they gave him a great big round of applause!

A Kindness Adventure

By Davin Hudnall

You should have seen the giraffe, elephants, and lions in our school gymnasium on February 12, 2020! Students at MES attended an assembly teaching them about kindness. The guest speaker introduced us to NED, a “person” who was invited to Kenya to meet children of the region and talk with them about their lives. The funny thing about NED though, is that he is a cardboard cutout, not a real person. In Kenya, most homes are small and made from brick and stone instead of being constructed more safely like here in America. Their drinking water is unhealthy; it comes from a pit that is used for the animals and where people go to bathe.

Before NED went to Kenya, he was scared because he had heard a lot of negative comments about the African region and its people. Many people told NED that the people were weird, the food was disgusting, and the water was not safe. While in Kenya, however, NED learned that the people were very nice and kind and appreciated everything that they had. The food was amazing, according to NED, and he helped the people build wells to keep their water clean and safe to drink. Ned’s trip to Kenya cast all the negative thoughts right out of his head!

The kindness that NED received from the people in Kenya made him want to share what he had felt with others. That is why he began traveling to schools to spread the idea that kindness doesn't cost anything; it does not depend on what you have or where you live. Kindness can be found anywhere in the world. So here are some basics you need to remember when it comes to kindness…

  1. Different Can Be Good

  2. Include Others

  3. Caring Is Cool

  4. I Can Make Friends Anywhere

  5. Each Person Matters A Lot

JUMP FOR HEARTS TO BEAT LONGER

By Mason Hamlett

“Keep Jumping!” While some students were jumping away, others were shining their basketball skills. On February 13th, the Jump Rope / Hoops for Heart fundraiser party was held. Our school’s top seller was 6th grader Aaron Lewis, who got to "slap" a pie in the face of the school’s second best seller, 3rd grader Piper Erb. Mrs. Wheat provided a UV black light for those that wanted to wear neon shirts so they could shine brightly! Contests for each grade included jump rope, knockout, dance, and hula hoop. The winners from each grade then competed against each other. The winners received a prize. There were many smiles throughout the gym, especially since over $3000.00 in donations went to the American Heart Association. Thank you to all who gave!

Robotics Rocks!

By Davin Hudnall

“Hurry hurry put the cube on the stand 4, 3, 2, 1…” On Tuesday, February 18th, the final Robotics Meet of the year was held at Aurora Elementary. The meet included teams from Manchester, Aurora, South Dearborn Middle School, Milan, Dillsboro, Moores Hill, Jac-Cen-Del, and Batesville. Members of Manchester’s team competed in the Skills Challenge. One team from our group competed in the final challenge to see if they would be one of two teams to participate in the Indiana State Competition.

During the Skills Challenge, teams of two students had to demonstrate their ability to drive their robot through an obstacle course in order to earn points. Points were earned by having their robots pick up cubes and place them on platforms without falling off. This is where most of the points can be earned. Points can also be scored for moving cubes into specific color-coded corners, or by getting orange balls into the cubes. Each team member operates the robot for about 30 seconds before switching off with their teammate for another 30 seconds. The presentation of awards was the final event of the evening. Sad to say, Manchester didn’t get an award, but they put forth a respectable effort. Pictured here is Mr. Zugelter’s 3rd and 4th grade team members. The 4th grade team of Nick Pfaffle and Andrew Richardson made it to the finals. Great job, Robo-animators!
