Rebel Review
October 10, 2026
Principal Message
South Families,
It is hard to believe that we have already reached the end of the first quarter. The first several weeks of the school year have gone quickly, and as I walk through our classrooms, hallways, athletic events, and activities, I continue to be proud of the way our students are representing South. There is a tremendous amount of positive energy in our school, and the next several weeks promise to be some of the busiest and most exciting of the year.
Of course, much of that excitement is centered around North-South Week, which begins Monday. This is one of those traditions that makes the high school experience special. For generations, students from both schools have looked forward to this week, and with both football teams entering the weekend undefeated, there is certainly an added level of anticipation this year. But North-South Week has always been about much more than what happens on the football field. It is about school spirit, tradition, community, giving back, and creating memories with classmates that our students will carry with them long after high school.
Amid all of the excitement, we are also preparing to close out the first quarter on Thursday, October 15. I encourage families to take a few minutes this weekend to check PowerSchool together, review grades and missing assignments, and have a conversation about how the first quarter has gone. Whether your student has had a great start or has encountered some challenges, the end of a quarter is a good opportunity to reflect, learn from the first nine weeks, and set goals for what comes next.
Every two weeks, I'll continue sharing The Rebel Review to keep you informed about important dates, upcoming events, and the many great things happening throughout our school. As always, thank you for your continued partnership and support. Together, we are off to a fantastic start, and I look forward to all that this school year has in store for our Rebel community. You can visit our website anytime for the latest news and information. And, of course, if you need direct assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the main office at 440-975-3648.
Go Rebels!
Sincerely,
Mr. Suttell
Principal

North/South Week Information
North-South Week is here, and it promises to be one of the most exciting and memorable in the history of our rivalry! Next week will be filled with school spirit, friendly competition, and traditions that generations of Rebels have enjoyed. With both football teams 8-0, the anticipation surrounding this year's matchup is sure to bring an incredible level of energy and Rebel pride to our school and community. Throughout next week, our building will come alive with spirited activities and opportunities for students to celebrate what makes South such a special place. Just as importantly, our students will use this excitement to give back, as proceeds from our Spirit Week activities will support the United Way of Lake County. The week will culminate with our Rebels taking on the North Rangers on Friday, October 16, at 7:00 p.m. at North High School. North-South Week has always been about more than a football game. It is about tradition, belonging, community, and creating memories our students will carry with them long after they leave South. We are excited to celebrate another unforgettable North-South Week together! Go Rebels!

Senior Class Trip - April 8-11 - Information
The senior class trip to New York City is scheduled from April 8-11, 2027. Earlier last week, the senior trip advisors met with seniors to provide information for those interested in attending the trip. For anyone that missed the meeting, here is the information that was discussed: 2026-27 Senior Class Trip Information. School Library/Media Center Information
The WE High Schools have a new Library Media Center Website—and it’s designed to help students find what they need without having to know exactly where to look first.
Find WeschoolsLibrary.weebly.com by going to our high school's website, clicking Academics, and choosing Library.
Students can use the site to:
- Research & Discover – find reliable sources, databases, research help, MLA information, NoodleTools, and more
- Read & Listen – find books, eBooks, audiobooks, comics, magazines, and their next great read
- News & Media – explore and question news, media, bias, and reliability
- Create & Explore – write, design, make, publish, film, craft, learn something new, or just explore their interests (There's even a credible site where teens can enter their own writing for a chance to win $500 and work with an editor to get published!)
- College & Career – explore career pathways in our district and beyond, prepare for college, work on applications, resumes, essays, interviews, and more
But here’s the part we especially want all students to know: they don’t have to figure everything out on their own. Throughout the site, students will see ways to research with Mrs. Holt, find their next read with her, start creating with her, explore their future with her, and more. They don’t need to have a perfectly formed question, and they don’t need to wait until they’re stuck.
If your teen says "I can't find a good source," "I don't know what to read," "I have an idea but don't know where to start," "I have no idea how what to do after I graduate," "I'm so overwhelmed," or even "I'm bored," please encourage them to talk to Mrs. Holt.
They can stop by the library when she's at our school, or use Connect & Get Help on the library website to reach her anytime. Whether they've worked with Mrs. Holt before or haven’t met her yet, your teen is welcome in the library, and she's here to help.

Smart Pass Information
SmartPass (a digital pass system) will be used at South High School to support fostering student accountability and responsibility during the school day. SmartPass supports limiting hallway time while making it a priority to keep students in class learning. Every minute counts and attendance matters! Ensuring our students are in class during instructional time is our top priority. The system helps to prevent off-task or unsafe behaviors in hallways and restrooms. Being able to know the destination of kids who are in the hallways helps teachers, support staff and administrators keep kids safe.
Students will be trained on SmartPass during our grade level meetings on August 21. Students will ask their teacher for permission to leave the classroom, start their pass on their Chromebook and then end their pass upon return to the classroom. The pass system allows students, teachers and administration to see how long they are out of class to help students in understanding better use of time. I want to emphasize that this not meant as a means to penalize students. It is simply a better pass system that will to help promote that our students are safe and spending more time in our classrooms learning.
If parents or guardians have any other questions about SMART PASS, please refer to their Parents and Families page.
South Clinic Reminder - Senior Immunization Information
Senior students are required by law to provide proof of MCV4/meningococcal meningitis vaccination (see district communication) It is very important that you submit updated immunization information to our clinic via fax (440-975-3645), or hard copy (return to clinic ). If you have any questions, please email them to our School Nurse at lisa.kovacic@weschools.org.
Reporting Absences
We’re excited to roll out SafeArrival, our new attendance reporting system designed to simplify how student absences are reported and tracked. This system will help reduce daily call volume, streamline the attendance process, and ensure accurate reporting, all while integrating directly with PowerSchool.
How SafeArrival Works
For Parents/Guardian
Absences can be reported via:
1. MyPowerHub Parent Portal ( look for Safe Arrival on the menu drop down)
2. Toll-Free Number: 855-612-7207 (all buildings) * Please Note: only guardians with registered numbers in their students account will be granted an absence. This will
take the place of our previous numbers that were used for attendance purposes.
- Absence types include: Full Day, Late Arrival and Early Release
- Parents can upload doctor’s notes directly through the SafeArrival app on MyPowerHub.
- Once submitted, absence information goes directly into PowerSchool, requiring no manual entry. Please allow the attendance office time to adjust anything that may be relevant to your absence until 9:30am . All attendance changes will be finalized daily by 2:30pm. If you do not report your students absence, multiple attempts will be made by the automatic system to contact you.
- For Early Releases, as long as we have a registered call and pre arranged release, there is no need for a guardian to come in to sign the student out. They may exit the building at the scheduled time.
