January 15, 2026

Dear Winnona Park Families,

This weekend, we celebrate the Martin Luther King Holiday. Many families have their own traditions in remembrance of Dr King. The City of Decatur’s MLK Service Project occurring over the weekend is a great idea to get families and children involved in a worthy service project that benefits members of our community. I can’t recommend this enough. The following organizations have engaging MLK activities as well:

Atlanta History Center

King Holiday at the King Center

National Center for Human and Civil Rights

Children’s Museum of Atlanta

One small thing I do at this time every year is to watch and listen to Dr King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. I also recommend spending 17 minutes of your family’s time listening to this.

Sincerely,

Greg Wiseman

Principal, Winnona Park Elementary School

Black History Month Events at Winnona Park

This is a reminder that the Winnona Park Equity Team & the PTA DEI Committee have great plans for our WPES Black History Month Celebration in February. We invite all the students at Winnona Park to take part in our Living History Museum.

Students will be able to present interesting facts about a prominent figure in Black history during Community Circle. Some suggestions include inventors, educators, artists, musicians, authors, athletes, and entrepreneurs. Black history is global and not just limited to America. Don't forget about "lesser-known" and global figures in history.

Please talk to your child about whether they’d like to participate and, if so, complete the online form by January 31: WPES Living History Museum Form. Several other activities are being finalized; stay tuned for more updates.
