Meijer of Wixom surprises Sarah G. Banks Middle School with generous donation Meijer of Wixom surprises Sarah G. Banks Middle School with generous donation

The Meijer of Wixom on Grand River Avenue left the Bulldogs in complete shock on Thursday when store director Seleana Yancey and Megan Vigna, the area lead, surprised Sarah G. Banks Middle School principal Jennifer VanWagnen with a check for $10,000.

The incredibly generous donation was apart of the storeโ€™s Meijer Team Gives program. Thanks to their generosity, Sarah G. Banks will build two new Gaga pits and purchase much needed indoor recess gear for the Bulldogs.

Two years ago, the Meijer of Wixom also surprised Wixom Elementary with a $10,000 donation which helped funded the Wolves an outdoor classroom.

Walled Lake Central kicked off homecoming week on Friday with its annual parade, carnival, and football game.

The festivities started during the school day a pep assembly that featured performances by the Vikingsโ€™ choir, cheerleaders and POMS team. Walled Lake Central senior Mirella Yousif gave us an inside look at the fun throughout the day with an Instagram takeover. You can watch it by clicking on the โ€œWLC Hoco โ€˜24โ€ highlight on our Instagram page.

The festivities then continued into the night as family and friends lined the sidewalks around the school and into the neighboring subdivision for the Homecoming Parade. Cars filled with the homecoming court and student-athletes led the way, followed by the Vikingsโ€™ marching band, and students from Loon Lake, Mary Helen Guest, Oakley Park, Pleasant Lake elementary schools.

After the parade, there was plenty of fun activities for all the kids in attendance. Along with an inflatable slide, candy stand, and face painting, there was a dunk tank. Students and kids lined up for the chance to dunk principal Kyle Meteyer, as well as teachers Joel Sharpe and Cody Armstrong.

The 2024 homecoming king and queen were then surprised during halftime of the football game. Addisyn Shamus and Anthony Poota were complete shocked when they realized they took home the honor.

โ€œI didnโ€™t think we won,โ€ admitted Shamus. โ€œIt though (it was the box with) the gold balloons, but they were blue, so I was confused at first, but they announced it so it was nice.โ€

โ€œIt was very awesome, it was pretty cool,โ€ added Poota.

While the evening itself was a special one, the Walled Lake Central football team fell to South Lyon, 51-16.

District seeks operating millage replacement in November election

Walled Lake Consolidated Schools is asking the community to replace its current operating millage with an 18 mill non-homestead millage that represents roughly $31 million and a 3.6297 mill hold harmless that represents approximately $2 million of the districtโ€™s budget. The total of $33 million accounts for 18 percent of the districtโ€™s $187 million revenue budget.

Every District in the state is expected to levy, with voter approval, 18 mills on all non-homestead properties in order to receive full state funding under Proposal A. The 3 mill "Headlee cushion" will allow the district to collect the full 18 mills over the duration of the operating millage. The proposal will not increase property taxes on any primary residence property that is within Walled Lake Consolidated Schools boundaries. Since the approval of Proposal A in 1994, the Walled Lake Consolidated Schoolsโ€™ community has overwhelmingly supported the operating millage, most recently in 2014.

If the November 5, 2024 proposal is not approved, the school district will lose more than $33 million in operating revenue every year and the state will not make up the shortfall.

More information about the 2024 Operating Millage Replacement can be found at www.wlcsd.org/elections.
