CAPTAIN CROWTHER'S CORNER

Ahoy Navigator Parents!

Hope you are all doing well and having a great start to a three day weekend and a great Easter Sunday.

Many things going on this week, number one being the 4th grade STAAR Writing test which will be on Tuesday. Our students are ready! I've been reading some great writing over the past few weeks and I know they will do their personal best. That is all we ask!

This is Public School Librarian Week, so please show some love to Ms. Tierney!

Be sure to mark your calendar for our PTA meeting next Tuesday, April 13 at 6:30 via ZOOM. Dr. Wright will be with us to talk about the upcoming BOND election on May 1. This does impact Negley in a huge way. Here is the link to the district Bond package information.

https://www.hayscisd.net/Page/8197

There are 6 different propositions on the ballot that will impact Hays CISD in general. There are 3 that have a critical impact on Negley - Props A, B, and F. I will give you a brief summary.

Prop A of this bond package includes a new addition for our campus, cafeteria expansion, and renovations inside the building. As you know, our school zone area is in a building boom right now. We are projected to be at 906 when we open in the Fall. I personally believe it will be more around 925. On a general basis, for the past 4 years, we have netted approximately 75-100 additional students per year, meaning that even though we lose students during the year, we end up with 75 - 100 additional students at the end of the year. Hays is a great district and people WANT to be here - and especially at the BEST elementary school in Hays! (in my opinion, but you know it's true!)

Prop B will provide new flooring for the library and office area (we have the same flooring that the school opened with 16 years ago!) And a new gym floor. It also includes a playscape cover for one of our playscapes. AND for those of you who are blessed to hear all our announcements on a daily basis, this includes updates for our intercom!

Prop F is to continue working on our network system for technology.

Please read all about each of the Propositions. I AM NOT telling you HOW to vote. I do want you to be informed as to how some of these propositions impact your child and their school! Please join our PTA and Dr. Wright the week after next, to hear his perspective on the bond package. We will send the Zoom link next week.

Here's to a great week!

Counselor's Corner - Career Day Time is Here - Virtual Style!

Virtual Career Day Volunteers Needed:

https://forms.gle/qV2y93bv5ipgeKx7A

Attention Navigator parents! It is time for CAREER DAY! Career day is a day where parents and community members get to show students what they do for a living, and how they got there! Students that are exposed to careers open their mind to skills, talents, and dreams, that they wouldn’t normally consider. This has always been a favorite for the students, but due to covid, we had to make some changes. Welcome to our first ever, virtual career day. This will give as many, or as few of you, a chance to participate… but through recorded video. You can decide if you would like to present to K-2, or 3-5, or both! This year, Flipgrid is the format that we will be using for virtual career day. Please see the attached flier (or look in your child’s newsletter) for additional information on how to participate. We hope to have you join us! Thank you so much for your continued interest in your child’s education and future.

Virtual Career Day Help Needed!

We need parents and community members to record and upload a short video about their careers for a virtual career day this year! Can you make a short video describing your profession for our students? Can you show us what your work looks like in the video? Please complete this form if you can help! More details to come from your NES school counselor, Liz Kirichenko. Elizabeth.kirichenko@hayscisd.net

Library News

We had a great week in library this week! I am looking forward to seeing many of our virtual learners returning in person this week! Any virtual learners who borrowed devices for virtual learning, please bring the device with the chargers back to school when you come. Your teachers will let me know that you returned it. If anything is missing the district will generate a bill for the missing component. If you have any library books, even from last year, please bring those too. We can’t wait to see those beautiful faces!

Parents, please help your students get those books back that have been out for a while. I will be sending email reminders again this week to help you know what is out. We are getting close to the end of the year and it would be great to have those books back!

As always, reach out if you have any questions, Colleen.Tierney@hayscisd.net.

Happy Reading!

  • Gator Reader Program, a program that encourages students to read with their parents often. The goal is to read 100 books together over the course of the year. Once your kindergartener finishes one sheet, he/she will turn it in, get a small prize and get a new recording sheet. When they complete all 4 sheets, they will have read 100 books and receive the official GATOR READER T-shirt! Here is a link to the letter and recording log.

Thank you HHS Hawk Bella Templin!

Bella adopted the garden shed at Negley as her NHS service project. Here is the work she has done so far! If you recall, this area was full of weeds and dead plants. Bella reached out to Lowe's for flower donations and they have agreed. We will keep you updated on her progress. It's almost completed!

Nuggets from Nurse Jill

Dear Negley Parents,

Please make sure your student comes to school with a clean mask every day!

Updates:

  • Physical barriers/sneeze guards – No longer recommended by the CDC and no longer required in the district. You may choose to continue to use them if you desire or if individual students feel more comfortable with them.
  • Masks – No change in our district mask policies. Masks are still recommended by public health agencies and required by Hays CISD.
  • Physical distancing – We continue to recommend 3 feet minimum spacing in the classroom and 6 feet spacing in situations when masks need to be removed, such as while eating. The CDC guidelines for 3 feet of spacing are specific to students, and only if mask use is universal. Six feet of space is still recommended for all staff.
    • Per the CDC, the definition of close contact does not change. We will still consider anyone who is less than 6 feet from a covid-positive person to be in close contact and subject to quarantine.

Just some quick reminders about COVID protocol regarding clearance for campus:

If your student stays home for illness, please do the following:

Notify the nurse ASAP via office phone or email.

Forward any doctor’s notes or test results to me to clear your student for campus.

If anyone in your household gets a test for COVID, please do the following:

· Keep all students home until you get results

· Notify the nurse ASAP

· This applies to all your students on any/all campuses

If your student comes in close contact with a COVID-positive individual outside of school, please do the following:

· Keep your student home

· Notify the nurse ASAP

· If your student is at school when you are notified of the exposure, please make plans to pick them up ASAP.

On 1/4/21, Hays CISD began using the modified close contact quarantine guidelines that the CDC released in December. This means instead of a 14 day quarantine after close contact a person may be able to quarantine for 7-10 days. The determination of whether a person quarantines for 7 or 10 days after close contact with someone who has been determined to have COVID-19 is based on the absence of symptoms and whether or not the person has received a negative covid-19 PCR test.

· If a quarantined individual remains symptom free AND receives a negative covid-19 PCR (not rapid) test result that was collected on or after day 5 of quarantine, they may return to work/school after day 7 of quarantine.

OR

· If a quarantined individual remains symptom free and does not take a covid-19 test during their quarantine, they may return to work/school after day 10 of quarantine.

We will then track this and follow up with you to ensure when it is safe for your student to be back on campus.

Please do not hesitate to call or email me at any time with any questions or concerns.

Thank you and be safe and well.

Remember to bring your picture ID - always!

Please remember that ANYTIME you come to school to join your child (other than just dropping off your child at the beginning of the day) you MUST check in at the front office and get your Raptor sticker. To receive a sticker, you must present a photo ID regardless if this is your first time or thousandth time to check in to the school. This is for student safety and for us to know who is on our campus at all times. Thank you for being nice to the front office staff as they enforce this safety measure.

This does not apply to evening activities - just the school day.

TRANSPORTATION TAGS

ALL FAMILIES WILL NEED A TRANSPORTATION TAG IF THEY WILL BE PICKING UP THEIR CHILD FROM CAMPUS.

These tags are super important for picking up your child at dismissal. Each family has a distinct number - it is your family number. Instead of calling out your child's name for all to hear, we call your family number. Each family will receive 2 cards and 3 round discs that need to be attached to your child's backpack. If you need extras for another adult that may be picking up your child , just let our Receptionist, Ms. Goodman know when she gives you your original. There will be a $1.00 charge for extra cards OR to replace a lost card after this initial pick up. This fee is to help us with replacement materials. So - the first ones are FREE, but later on there will be the small charge.

PLEASE EMAIL MS. GOODMAN TO SCHEDULE A TIME TO PICK UP YOUR TRANSPORTATION TAGS or STOP BY THE RECEPTION AREA.

If you are picking up your child in the car rider line, these tags can hang from your passenger side visor using a rubber band or from your rearview mirror. It makes it easy for us to see and call your number. If you do not have your car tag, you will be asked to drive to the front office and present your ID in order to pick up your child.

If you are walking to the school to pick up your child, you will need to show your tag to your child's teacher OR the teacher on duty. They will check the number on the card with the tag attached to your child's backpack before releasing your student to you.
