Boys Basketball Riding High Atop Boulder County

What a great week for Monarch Varsity Boys’ Basketball! They swept Broomfield, Fairview and Boulder High School! A huge shout out to the students for showing up in force for the Fairview game. The crowd was amazing and the energy was electric! And thank you also to the administration. Pretty cool when your principal leads you in a school chant – jumping up and down!

Starting with the win against Broomfield, 81-74, Van Nellessen had 17 points to add to his double digit rebound total, adding one more double double on the season. Tyler Carlson had 17 points and Graham Johnson had 16 points. And a huge kudos to Riley Montemayor in the Fairview game. He had his most outstanding game to date leading Monarch in their win. In addition to his great rebounding, he dropped 12 points in Monarch’s 64-41 victory. Graham Johnson also had 12 points and Nellessen had another double double with 11 points and 13 rebounds (not to mention numerous defensive swats and an incredible dunk, fed by Carlson).

To complete the sweep of Boulder County, Monarch beat Boulder High School, 71-52. Carlson had the hot hand on Saturday shooting 71% from the field with 16 points and Montemayor helped the cause with his powerful 10 rebounds. Yes, Monarch is “King of the County!”

Monarch will have another busy week with three games: tonight (Monday) at home against Rocky Mountain, tomorrow night (Tuesday) at home against Prairie View, and then away at Erie on Friday night. All games start at 6:30. The team would love your continued support as they try to win the Front Range League title!

Girls Basketball Improves to 7-2 in League Play

The Monarch girl’s Basketball program had another awesome week of league play. We had three doubleheaders against the other BVSD teams in our league.

It all started Monday when JV played Broomfield on their home court. The JV team continued to improve their individual skills and team play but fell short taking the loss.

The varsity team followed on Tuesday at home against Broomfield. After a slow start, Monarch was down by double digits at half. Aggressive defense and energetic offense closed the gap to 4 points heading into the fourth quarter. Unfortunately this was not enough and the varsity girls lost, 45-58.

Their competitive spirit fueled the team after the loss early in the week when the girl’s varsity team brought their A game on the road at Fairview Friday night. In front of an amazing student section, the Monarch girl’s varsity team controlled the game from start to finish and pulled off a 53-36 win.

The week wrapped up on Saturday morning when the C and varsity teams hosted Boulder High. The C team faced a strong opponent when they took on BHS’s blended C/JV team. The Monarch C team’s hustle and enthusiasm did not prove enough and they suffered another loss.

Momentum from the night before carried the Monarch varsity team to an early lead against their Boulder High opponents. The girls did not let up, maintained teamwork on defense and intensity on offense in the 70-40 blow out win, improving their record in league play to 7-2.

The upcoming week is full with exciting girls basketball, come see it with your own eyes!

All three teams will be on the road Monday when they face Rocky Mountain in Fort Collins. The JV and varsity teams continue the road trip on Tuesday at Prairie View. Since JV and C teams did not play last Friday, they will host Fairview at home on Wednesday starting at 5pm. What better way to spend your Friday night than to come cheer on the Monarch girl’s basketball teams at home when they take on Erie with C/JV at 5pm and varsity at 6:30? The week ends Saturday against Arvada West on their home court.
