Principal's Message
Hello Pioneers,
I hope you and your families had a wonderful weekend. Yesterday, Sunday, May 10, we celebrated Mother’s Day. I wanted to take a moment to honor the incredible women who shape the lives of our Pioneer Scholars. Whether you are a mother, grandmother, aunt, foster parent, or mentor, your influence is the foundation upon which our students build their futures.
We see the late-night homework sessions, the early-morning drop-offs, and the endless encouragement you provide. Your partnership is what makes our school community so special. I hope you all enjoyed a beautiful and relaxing day.
SOL Testing This Week This week marks the heart of our testing schedule. I am incredibly proud of the hard work our teachers and students have put in all year, and I am confident our scholars are ready to excel.
Tuesday, 5/12: 8th Grade Civics SOL
Thursday, 5/14: ALL Students - Reading SOL
To ensure our students' success, please help them arrive prepared by getting a good night’s sleep, fully charging their Chromebooks, and eating a healthy breakfast (available at home or school).
Safety Reminder: Helmets & E-Bikes As the weather warms up, our crossing guards have noticed more students riding bikes and e-scooters without helmets. Safety is our top priority. I have attached a flyer from the Sheriff’s Department regarding bike laws and safety. Please review this with your students to ensure they are protected on their way to and from school.
Thank you for your continued support of the Sterling Community!

Personal Device Policy (Policy 8655) Please review the "Student Personal Device Use on LCPS Property" guidelines. Recently, we have noted an uptick in students using personal devices during the school day. Per Policy 8655, if a cell phone is confiscated, it will only be returned to a parent, guardian, or adult family member. Continued violations will result in additional disciplinary consequences. We appreciate your partnership in maintaining a focused learning environment.

Student Pick-up / Drop-off Procedures:
Thanks to the overwhelming number of parents who continue to follow our kiss-n-ride procedures. Please know that our intention is to make the process as efficient as possible. To continue to improve the process, please adhere to the following:
- Please follow the directions of the adults who are helping wih the flow of traffic. We will utilize a portable stop sign to help with traffic; please pull all the way to the stop sign.
- Students SHOULD NOT walk between traffic to get to their cars or to the building. This is a dangerous practice and goes against school practice and procedures.
- As communicated earlier, the entrance to the Sterling Golf Club is NOT an authorize area for students to be picked up or dropped off. This is private property and the proprietors have requested that our parents and guardians no longer use their property.

Update to Student Personal Device Use on LCPS Property:
Please be aware that on Tuesday, December 16, the LCPS School Board approved an updated Policy 8655 - Student Personal Device Use. Especially for parents, guardians, family members, and students, STM will be enforcing this policy with fidelity. Below, I have shared a link with additional information from Dr. Spence, LCPS' Superintendent.

Bicycle, E-Bike & Scooter Safety Information
Students who ride bikes, E-bikes, Mopeds, scooters, etc. to school should adhere to Loudoun County Sheriff's Office safety ordinance. Please see the link below for information on helmets, safety, and best practices. Moving forward, students who ride these transports to school will be required to wear a helmet and follow school zone speed laws. If you are unable to buy a helmet, please reach out directly to me or our Parent Liaison, Kara Tufts.

As always, please share any additional questions, comments, and/or concerns.
Our Mission
Chronic Absenteeism by Grade
10% or more, absent from total days of school
🚩 Current overall rate – 14.4% 🚩
- Sixth-grade rate – 14.3% 🟢
- Seventh-grade rate – 13% 🟢
- Eighth-grade rate – 16.% 🟡
Tiers:
- 🟢 10% to 14%
- 🟡 15% to 24%
- 🔴 25%+
We need your help with keeping our chronic absenteeism rate low. Students need to be present in school to learn. We want all of our students to be successful and this starts with them being at school each day. Our goal is for all grade levels to be in the green (tier 1). Please make sure that you talk to your child about the importance of being at school every day.

WEDNESDAY MAY 13th @ 7PM- 9PM
In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, the LCPS Office of Student Mental Health Services is teaming up with Wellness Loudoun for a community screening of the teen mental health documentary Our Turn to Talk. This thought-provoking film features teens speaking honestly about the pressures they face and what they wish adults understood about their mental health. Following the screening, parents are invited to stay for a panel discussion and Q&A. Anastasia Vlasova, the primary teen (now in her 20s!) featured throughout the film, will participate in the discussion. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. Reserve your spot by clicking Tickets. (No cost is associated with this reservation.)
Pease Note: When schools are closed, please use this resource: https://www.lcps.org/MentalHealthServices to secure community assistance and mental health services for you or your child(ren).
Counselor's corner
Important update in regard to course selection changes for the rising 9th graders - Park View
-Students have until June 12th to make elective or level changes (please connect with your counselor for changes))
Students will not be allowed to make any changes at the beginning of the school year (only case-by-case for level changes after Q1 ends) but no elective changes (per. Park View admin)
Planning Ahead: High School Course Expungement
Did you know that middle schoolers taking high school credit courses (like Algebra, Geometry, or World Languages) have a unique opportunity to "reset" their high school transcript? If your student didn't get the grade they hoped for, you can choose to expunge the course, meaning the grade and credit are completely removed from their high school records and GPA.
Quick Tips for Families:
Automatic Reset: If a student receives an "F," the course is automatically expunged by the counselor—no paperwork needed!
Check the Sequence: Since math and languages follow a specific order, expunging a prerequisite usually means the student will need to retake the course to move forward.
GPA Boost: Consider expunging grades lower than a B- to keep that future high school GPA strong.
Irreversible: Take a moment to chat with your student—once a grade is expunged, it cannot be added back later.
Important Deadlines
To expunge a course from this past year, please complete the Permission Click form by the end of the first quarter of the 2026-2027 school year.
Current 6th & 7th Graders: Submit via: https://permission.click/gN0KP/int/Qaa2/signee-info
Current 8th Graders: Submit via: https://permission.click/l8y06/int/llP/signee-info
If you have any questions about what is best for your student’s academic journey, please reach out to our school counseling department. We are here to help!
