KEY NEWS FOR EXPLORER FAMILIES

Happy Friday, Explorer Families! The week has been another great one! Today was the first All Pro Dad meeting of the school year, and we had a fantastic turnout, with more than 104 families in attendance! Thank you to Mr. Chaffer (5th Grade), Mr. Asher (TAG), Mr. Devlin (PTA Dad Representative), Mr. Bedford (2nd Grade), Mr. Pearch (Health/PE), and Mr. Konigsberg (Health/PE Paraprofessional) for their organization, preparation, and leadership in making this morning's event such a success.

Next week kicks off the Northwood PTA Piggy Palooza fundraiser! Be sure to see the graphic below for dress-up day themes and the many ways donations can be made to support our school. The PTA does so much for our students, staff, and families, and those efforts are made possible through your generous support. The week concludes with their first major event of the year, Family Fun Night, on Friday, September 18, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Northwood bus loop!

Today, our flags were flown at half-staff in honor of the 25th anniversary of 9-11. We remember those whose lives were forever impacted by that day and reflect on the importance of coming together with kindness and unity.

With gratitude and reflection,

Heather Q. Rucker, Principal

KINDERGARTEN EXPLORERS

Kindergarteners had the opportunity to meet their 5th grade buddies last week! They spent time getting to know each other through a mini interview about some of their favorite things and even drew portraits of each another. This special buddy relationship is something both kindergarteners and 5th graders look forward to each year. It was wonderful to see their excitement as they met and chatted with their buddies. The kindergarten classrooms were filled with smiles, laughter, and happy conversations!

FIRST GRADE EXPLORERS

First grade kicked off our weather unit in a colorful and fun way! Students held pinwheels outside and observed which way the wind was blowing. They also took note of how fast the wind was blowing in each direction. We discussed other ways that the wind is observable. For example, trees blowing or water bottles blowing away.

AVID GOAL OF THE WEEK

Northwood is proud to be an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) school. AVID Elementary equips students with the foundational skills and mindset needed for future success. Our staff is focused on enhancing instructional consistency, fostering a college and career readiness mindset, increasing student engagement and building organizational and study skills.

As part of this, each week Northwood will be focused on one goal as a school. Be sure to ask your child about it!

Next week's AVID goal is: to use my best cafeteria manners (chew with my mouth closed, not talk with food in my mouth, not play with my food, and remain seated).

OUR CLINIC CLOSET NEEDS CLOTHES

Accidents happen - in the classroom, at recess, at lunch or the bathroom. When our Explorers get messy they often head to the Clinic to get cleaned up. We keep extra clothes on hand for those quick changes. Our clinic closet is in need of boys bottoms and boys underwear, but we appreciate all donations. If you have any clothing items you'd like to contribute you can send them in with your student or drop them off at the front desk. Thanks!

DISMISSAL CHANGES? MAKE THEM IN PICKUP PATROL

Northwood has partnered with PickUp Patrol to help us track dismissals. PickUp Patrol provides families with a convenient way to make changes to your child’s dismissal plans and helps ensure that students are accurately and safely dismissed each day.

If you need to change how your child should be dismissed, you should submit that information via PickUp Patrol before 1:30 pm on the day of the change, and our staff will be notified. We no longer accept dismissal requests via email or paper notes. Please do not email teachers directly.

All dismissal information and changes must be entered into PickUp Patrol.

If you have any questions, please first check the PickUp Patrol Parent Guide. If you need additional assistance, please reach out to Mrs. Robertson at Northwood’s front desk, robertsonl1@fultonschools.org.

CAFETERIA PRINCIPAL ACCOUNT FUND

Did you know? Our school community has a Cafeteria Principal Account Fund. This account will be used to fulfill any meal costs for students that reach an account balance of zero. We often have families and extended family members that ask if or how they can pay off lunch balances or support our students in this way, now the process of doing so is easy!

Should you be interested in adding to the Cafeteria Principal Account Fund, just send a check or cash to school in an envelope to Mrs. Rosa Gutierrez, our cafeteria manager, and notate that the funds go to the Principal Fund. Please reach out to Mrs. Gutierrez, gutierrezabr@fultonschools.org, if you have any questions.

LUNCHTIME REMINDERS

Parents may eat lunch with students after the first two weeks of school - starting August 17th. Teachers eat with the students during the first week, and the students are learning the routine the second week. We also encourage nutritious lunches; therefore sodas, canned drinks, fast food, candy, energy drinks, etc. are discouraged. We kindly ask that you refrain from bringing these items to school or sending them in lunchboxes.
