National Poetry Month

This is an exciting month as we celebrate poetry in many different forms! Our April lessons will focus on poetry in all grades. April 27th is National "Poem in Your Pocket" Day, so I encourage each of you to celebrate that in your classes. Here is a template to get you started and some additional info.

We are doing "book spine poetry" in the library with grades 3-5 (check out the Padlet!), and we are focusing on space books and sharing "Storytime from Space" to coincide with our StarLab visit in grades K-2. (The kids are LOVING seeing the astronauts and books float around as they read to them!)

You can also use this fun Google Drawing template to create "magnetic poetry" about springtime. I have shared it in the Google Classroom with grades 3-5.

Battle of the Books Update

Battle of the Books...

We only have a few practices left before our REGIONAL competition for Battle of the Books! Our team represented our school well at the county competition and learned a lot, and we are excited to compete against county winners from all over our region! Please remind your students on the team to always be reading at least one BOB book to keep them fresh in their mind. Each team member also has access to battlequestions.com, which helps quiz them on potential questions that may be like the ones at competition, so if they have any extra time during the day, that is a great tool to use to help them sharpen their skills!

Remaining Meeting Dates:

4/5/2023

4/6/2023

4/19/2023

4/20/2023

4/25/2023--Regional EBOB Competition at Morehead Elementary School/Boys & Girls Club

Students will be gone from 9:00-2:15 that day. They will report to your rooms BEFORE reporting to us.

All Battle of the Books shirts need to be laundered and brought back to school to make sure we have them for competition day.

STAFF BOOK CLUB--Yay!!

The first book club meeting was awesome, and we are meeting on Tuesday, April 4th from 6-8pm at Floyd's in MHC to discuss Game Changers (about Dean Smith and Charlie Scott and the way they changed basketball in NC and the world).

Our NC Humanities Grant has given our school 15 copies of 5 different NC-based titles to run from February through June. Please fill out this Google Form if you are interested in participating in the book club or just stop by the library to get your own copies from me. They are yours FREE to keep, and we still have available spaces if more folks want to jump in for this round. If we enjoy it, we can always continue on after the grant books are finished and choose our own books. :)

40 Book Challenge!!

Remind your students in grades 3-5 about the 40 Book Challenge! Our goal is to read 40 chapter books over the course of the school year, and I have started filling in my own chart so they can watch it grow throughout the year. This is an optional activity, and some of your students have already picked up their own challenge papers in the library. You can see that I am adding the image of each book cover as I finish each book. This is a great way to show your kids what you are reading if you decide to participate in the 40 Book Challenge, too! Showing your students that YOU are a reader is a powerful way to encourage their reading habits without having to say a thing.

Tech Tidbits...

What is Padlet and why should I use it in my classroom?

Padlet is a fun (mostly free) website/app that is a great way for students to share work digitally and give feedback to one another. I am using this as a tool this month to share our photos of our "Book Spine Poetry", and students are also able to provide feedback to one another as a part of this tool, which is good in helping them be critical consumers of information and also learn to reflect and give feedback that is constructive, rather than hurtful. Many students I have done this with have said they've never used Padlet before, so if this is a new tool to you, check out the video below for a quick tutorial and some info on ways you might use it in class. **Note: I do pay for the premium version, but you do not have to do this at all. You can just delete old Padlets and create new ones if you run out of space in your free account. Questions? Come talk to me and I will be happy to help get you started!

Staff Survey:

Mr. Daniels and I are working to create some great tech PD opportunities for our staff, but we want to make sure what we are offering is what you actually WANT, so please fill out this short survey so we know what you want and need for this year! CLICK HERE

Accessing Books from the NC Kids Digital Library | Scribe

EVERY student in Carteret County Public Schools has access to this resource. I am showing an example of researching famous people for biographies, but you could also remind your students that this is a tool for them to access eBook versions of popular library books when the physical library books are already checked out.

Check out the resources on this monthly calendar for some great April literacy activities. If you're not already using Epic! with your students, now is a great time to try it out! Hey, podcast people! Check this out!

To foster interaction with other librarians and educators around the world, I have recently started my own podcast, and I'm working to share things related to books, libraries, and education on a sort-of-weekly basis. I generally release new episodes on Monday evenings, and sometimes include interviews with special guests. If you enjoy podcasts, or know a librarian or book lover who might enjoy this, please take a listen and feel free to share!
