Fantastic First Grade and Kindergarten

K-1 students have been learning about different holiday traditions. Last Friday we played the dreidel game and made Hanukkah latkes! Our third grade friends visited us to help with grating the potatoes and stuck around to read holiday books with a K-1 book buddy. Happy holidays!

Sweet Second Grade

I love this time of year! We began our Holidays Around the World study starting with learning the 7 continents of the world. There is a great video that is super engaging. I can say all the students know where the seven continents are now! Did you know children in England burn their letters to Santa in the fireplace so that they go up the chimney and straight to the North Pole? Also, did you know gingerbread and advent calendar traditions came from Germany? We are learning so much about traditions all over the world.

We read The Grinch Who Stole Christmas by Dr.Suess. It was very interesting to compare and contrast the Grinch with Scrooge from The Christmas Carol by: Charles Dickens. The students really enjoyed this study!

Thank you to the parents who came to take over lunch and recess duties so our staff could enjoy lunch together. It was a real treat to eat all together with our colleagues. Thanks to Morgan Jadis for helping to build this super cool fort outside during recess!

Thoughtful Third Grade

The holiday season is in the air for our terrific Third Graders! With our Zones program, the students discussed the size of a problem. Does their reaction to a problem justify the Zone they put themselves into? They thought about and discussed what they could do to measure and appropriately respond to frustrations and concerns.

For Language Arts and Social Studies, the children created questions; they then asked Chief Suokko. It was so fun for them to hear him talk about his job and how he likes to help our community. After the interview, the children went through the Writing Process to write informative paragraphs about Chief Suokko and being a police officer. The class is having a super time practicing for their Holidays Skit with the 4th and 5th Graders. For Math, the class started their unit by using place value understanding to round whole numbers and add and subtract within 1,000. The children examine and practice different algorithms to solve 3-digit addition and subtraction 3-digit equations.

Lastly, the children enjoy observing and discovering the names of the birds visiting our bird feeder. We are collecting data on visits by particular birds, which we will evaluate later in the year.

Fabulous Fourth and Fifth Grade

It's the season of exploration in grades 4 and 5!

In math, we are using Christmas themes scenarios to make tally charts, line plot chart, bar graphs and line graphs. After making these charts, we are examining the data and creating story problems.

In ELA, 4th grade researched a different country and greatly enjoyed learning about other cultures. Now we are writing essays comparing and contrasting holiday traditions. 5th grade is writing essays based on the results of their favorite Science experiment from the past few weeks.

4th grade Science has used different materials to show how sound travels in the form of vibrations. 5th grade Science has started their study of the Earth and Space.

This week in Wellness

Students practiced various skills and played a variety of games. The week began with hula hoop showdown (two teams rock-paper-scissors and hopping), then we moved onto holiday games like reindeer run, feed the reindeer, north pole versus south pole, unlock the igloo, reindeer tag, Grinch tag, snowman tipover, the Grinch run, winter this or that, and winter edition of locomotor listen and move. We ended the week with holiday stations that included: building 'gingerbread' houses, snowball targets, S-A-N-T-A (like horse in basketball), filling Santa's bag with toys, and snowmobile races.

Our health lessons included conflict resolution, preventing colds and keeping germs away, first aid and medicine safety, and staying safe from poisons. Third graders created their own first aid 'kit'. Staying safe from poisons was really cute- we watched a video about Spike the porcupine...'quills up stay away, quills down it's okay'. Students enjoyed it.

Here's hoping for lots of snow so we can use the sleds at recess!

Happy holidays to all of you and looking forward to seeing you and your child/children in the New Year.

News from Robin Gregg School Counselor

Note from Ms. Gregg, School Counselor– The holiday season is a time of many emotions. In addition to feelings of anticipation, excitement, and joy, many adults and children also feel stress, anxiety, and disappointment during this time of year. Here at DCS we try to anticipate the full array of feelings our students may experience. We work to keep things calm and low-key and we continue to provide the same routines and support we provide to the children throughout the school year. As always, I welcome communication from you, our students’ families. Please reach out to me and/or your child(ren)’s teacher or other DCS staff members if you wish to share any concerns
