String Strength Lab
AP-1
Purpose
Calculate the tensile strength of the supporting string and the force applied to the supporting pin.
Materials
beam, 2 swing clamps, 90 degree clamp, mass set, and string
Pendulum Clamp
Procedure
Set the equipment as shown below.
Before adding mass, determine the measurements required to calculate the string’s tensile strength.
Begin with a small mass and gradually move it along the length of the beam until the string breaks. As the tension increases, the string may stretch. Adjust the clamp(s) as needed to keep the beam level. If the string does not break, increase the mass and again move it incrementally along the beam until the string breaks.
Data
Draw a picture of your apparatus. Label and record all necessary quantities.
Calculations
Show your work for the tensile strength of the string and force from the supporting pin.
