Did you know?
As we wrap up the 1st trimester, we want to remind our parents and guardians that junior kindergarten through 4th grade utilize Standards-Based Report Cards to give you a clearer and more detailed picture of your child’s progress. This format allows us to focus more specifically on the skills and knowledge your child is learning in each subject, aligned directly with the grade-level standards.
In a Standards-Based Report Card, students are assessed on their progress toward meeting specific learning standards, rather than receiving a single, overall letter grade per subject. Here’s how it benefits your child:
- Clear Expectations: The report card clearly defines the essential skills and knowledge students should acquire, allowing us to provide feedback on their progress in each area.
- Growth-Focused: By focusing on individual standards, we can better identify areas where a student excels or may need more support, helping us personalize their learning experience.
- Accurate Reflection of Learning: Standards-based grading measures a student’s current level of mastery on each standard, allowing us to share a more precise view of their growth over time.
The report card uses the following levels to show student progress in each area, "not assessed," "experiencing difficulty” “approaching expectations,” and “meets expectations." This information helps you understand where they are strong and where they might benefit from additional focus or practice. Our goal for all students is to reach the "meeting" level for each instructional standard by the end of the school year.
If you have any questions about the report card or would like further clarification, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here to work together to support your child’s learning journey!
Thank you for your continued partnership and support.

Happy Career and College Readiness Month!
This week and next week students are learning about our new Character Counts trait, Respect! Respect is one of our SWARM values and a trait students know a lot about as they try hard to model it daily, in the classroom, with adults and peers, and at home. In our conversations in the classroom, we discussed ways we are respectful at school and home and respectful to one another. In following our Character Counts definition of respect, we took a deeper look at how we treat others the way we want to be treated, what it means to be courteous, acknowledging that we are all different and deserve to be treated with respect regardless of differences. In being respectful we work through arguments, and we don't use being mad, tired, frustrated, etc. as an excuse for being unkind to others. We also acknowledge that we may tease and joke with our peers, but feelings can get hurt, and it is respectful to own up when we hurt someone's feelings, instead of thinking it wasn't a big deal or dismissing it as a joke.
Counseling lessons for the rest of the month will be centered on career and college readiness. Next week Kindergarten will learn about different jobs and guess careers based on materials, vehicles, and equipment someone might have. 1st grade will think outside of the box and draw a picture of a different career based on a prompt, for example, "I work outside, I can be..." In 4th and 5th grade students will explore how their interests, skills, and goals align with different career clusters. 6th graders will be introduced to South Dakota My Life and see what their interests and likes match them with careers through the online career platform, Xello.
A big congratulations to our October Character Counts! These students show us all what it means to be trustworthy daily through their choices, treatment of others, and actions.
