Using πŸ˜ƒπŸ’»βπŸ‘ŒπŸ’πŸŽ to Increase Student Engagement

Wondering what those emojis mean? I πŸ‘€ love 🧑 using emojis πŸ˜ƒ to make my messages πŸ’ and lessons πŸ“more interesting πŸ‘. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so why not leverage the value of a picture/emoji to increase student engagement?

Where do you start? It's easier than you think. Did you know that you have an emoji keyboard available at your fingertips? Select the Windows button and the period button at the same time to activate the emoji keyboard. (Windows + .) If you are using a Chromebook, you can add a Chrome extension like Emoji Keyboard by JoyPixels to access emojis. For Mac users, press (CTRL + CMD + Space) to activate your emoji keyboard.

Now, that you have access to emojis let's talk about a few ways they can be used to add instant engagement to your classroom.

  • Icebreaker - Encourage your students to use three emojis that represent who they are. Have them add their emojis to a shared Google Slide or Jamboard. πŸ‘©β€πŸ«πŸ‘§πŸ‘§πŸ°πŸ“š

  • Retelling or Summarizing a Story - Can your students use nothing both emojis to retell or summarize a story? πŸ‘§πŸ‘. πŸ‘§πŸ§‘πŸ‘§. πŸ•·πŸ“πŸ•ΈπŸ·. πŸŽ‘πŸ…πŸ·. ❌πŸ₯“πŸ™Œ. πŸ‘§πŸ·.

  • Exit Tickets - Use emojis to gauge student understanding of a topic. You can have them pick their own emojis or have 3-4 emojis pre-selected for students to choose from. πŸ‘πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈπŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ

  • Social-Emotional Check-Ins - Sometimes students have a hard time expressing their emotions, use emojis to help them out. Use emojis as a way to check in with students daily. Even the littles can use emojis to express how they are feeling. πŸ˜ƒπŸ˜πŸ˜’

  • Character Traits - When describing the word "grumpy" which emoji comes to mind? Pairing a visual with the word will aid in vocabulary development for all learners. 😠

  • Number Representation - Use emojis to represent numbers and have the students solve what each emoji represents. β›… + 7 = 🌈, 🌈 - β›… = πŸ’§, 🌈= ?, β›… = ?

The possibilities are endless! What other ways can you think of to use emojis with your students? Have an idea? Tweet it out and tag me @TechCoachFikac.

Schoology Tip: Making the Syncing Process Faster

Want to speed up the syncing process? It is a good practice to ensure your assignments for the previous grading period are no longer set to sync to TAC. To do this for all Grading Period 1 assignments, follow these simple steps:

  1. Go to your Schoology Gradebook
  2. Click the 3 dots in the top right corner and select Bulk Edit
  3. Uncheck the Sync to SIS checkbox for all Marking Period 1 assignments
  4. Click SAVE CHANGES

Repeat this process for all courses.

🐢🐱🐭 Using Emojis to Create Seesaw Activities 🐢🐱🐭

Now that you know how to access emojis, let's talk about how you can use them to create Activities within Seesaw. I promise this just might be a game-changer for some of you!

To add emojis to an activity, click on the T to create a label. Click inside the label and activate your emoji keyboard. Once you have added your emoji, use the handles to resize your label. You can leave the border or remove it by clicking on the 3 dots to access your label options. Once you are done, click and drag to move your emoji to your desired location.

Want to make copies of the emoji? Click on the 3 dots and select "duplicate." You now have an activity with draggable emojis that students can manipulate to demonstrate their learning and understanding.

Want to learn more about creating activities? I can help you get started creating your own formative assessments in Seesaw!
