Lutherville Families,

What a great week at Lutherville!

Today marks the three-quarters mark of the school year with the end of Marking Period 3. You should have received an automated email today sharing your child's absence summary. As a reminder, we are always striving to reduce chronic absenteeism at our school, which is defined by the Maryland State Department of Education as missing 10% of school days or more. As of today, that is 14 days of school, and we want all students to avoid hitting 18 days for the year if at all possible!

On Monday we welcomed the next generation of Leopards in for Kindergarten Signing Day (aka Kindergarten Round-Up). Thank you to Ms. Kelly and the KG Team for an awesome event. Teachers had time and opportunity to be learners and grow in their craft as well.

On Wednesday we took class photos and had an excellent evening at the Lutherville Lab Art Show! It was a blast to see families and the community seeing and celebrating our students artwork. Thank you to Ms. Powell and Mr. Weigle for their efforts.

And on Friday we had a fantastic morning of Career Day Presentations. From journalists, to robotics, to video game design, to dog trainers, to the Towson University football team, it was an amazing morning! Thank you to Mrs. Henderson for organizing!

Next week we have a spirit week leading into spring break. Please see the information below. And of course, Friday is the big ROARING RUN we've been building up to over the last few weeks. Every child will have the chance to run during their Specials time and we are almost two-thirds to our goal as a school! Looking forward to a fun-filled week and day to take us up to Spring Break.

In Partnership,

Mr. McComb

Update from the Health Suite Update from the Health Suite

Because of the sharing of bike and batting helmets, similar to trying on costumes in the fall, there is often a seasonal uptick in head lice in spring. Head lice is a common occurrence in children 3-11 years of age, with an estimated 6-12 million occurrences each year. It is good practice to examine your child’s head weekly to make sure he/she does not have head lice.

The following signs or symptoms indicate that the condition may be present:

  • Persistent itching of the scalp

  • An insect about 1/8 inch long in the hair, around the ears and the back of neck. The lice (live bugs) are almost always found in layers of hair underneath the top layer.

  • Tan or white nits (eggs) are located approximately 1/8th of an inch away from the scalp. They attach themselves to the hair shaft with special glue. A few ways to differentiate a nit from a hair plug or dandruff is: A hair plug or dandruff is easy remove from the hair shaft, it doesn’t have that “glue “that nits have. The hair shaft also goes through the dandruff (as a visual think of a straw going through a sipee cup lid). A nit lays on the hair shaft and is difficult to remove (think of a piece of cheese glued onto a piece of bread).

If you suspect this condition, contact your health care provider for diagnosis and treatment. Please notify the school nurse at 443-809-7385. In addition, all members of your household should be examined and treated if needed.

Fundraising for the Roarin' Run

At the time of this report, we are at $4,059 which is 68% of our goal. Amazing! We congratulate Cecilia R. for being our third raffle winner - a 3 month family membership to Coppermine - Timonium.

More incredible prizes await the winners next week, our last week, including:

- One week of Keith Van Eron's full day soccer camp (valued at $425)

- One week of Keith Van Eron's half day camp (valued at $225)

- Family Fun Pack for Sky Zone (four 90 min jump sessions, 1 large pizza & 4 fountain drinks) (valued at $139)

- Found Studio (amazing local gift shop) gift card and bag

This is the LAST CALL for pledge forms to be eligible for prizes next Friday!

How does this all work again?

Step 1: A student's friends, family or they themselves makes an online donation or writes a check to Lutherville Lab PTA. Any amount that works for you works for us!

Step 2:
On their pledge sheets (see colors below, should be in student's green folder, more coming home next week), the student's parents/guardians sign to confirm each donation/pledge has been received.

Step 3:
The students return their sponsor pages, either one slip at a time or all at once, to the front office. On Kelly McDevitt's desk is a clear box where each slip is entered for a raffle prize.

Step 4:
Each Fri on the morning announcements Mr. McComb will announce one winner (or more, if we can!) for the raffle prize(s).
