SHS COLLEGE CORNER APRIL 2026

Next Steps: College Admission, Class Registration, and How College Credit Hours Work

Confirming Your Admission If you have been admitted, check your college email account and the admissions portal for instructions and deadlines. Important next steps usually include accepting your offer of admission, submitting an enrollment deposit, and completing any required forms (health records, residency verification, and financial aid documents). Keep copies of deadlines in a calendar and contact the admissions office if anything is unclear — they can confirm next steps and answer questions about orientation, housing, and placement testing.

Registering for Classes and Understanding Credit Hours Before registration, review your degree requirements and meet with an academic advisor to choose courses that count toward your major, general education, and graduation timeline. Most colleges use credit hours to measure course weight: a typical semester course is 3 credit hours and usually meets about three hours per week in class for a 15-week semester. Full-time status is commonly 12–15 credit hours per semester (4-5 classes); full-time enrollment affects financial aid, housing, and certain campus privileges. Lab courses, studio classes, or courses with extra meetings may carry different credit values. When you register, check prerequisites, course level (100–400+ numbers, a lower number indicates a lower level course), and whether classes are offered online or in person. If you need help estimating workload or staying on track for graduation, your academic advisor can help you plan a balanced schedule.

Meet with an Advisor/Attend Orientation

Many colleges in Utah have advisors dedicated to helping first year students succeed. You can find your advisor by logging into your school’s portal, checking your college email, or google "[College Name] academic advising” or “[College Name] orientation” Below are links to Utah school’s academic advising pages. Many advisors have appointments available virtually. Advisors can help you if you have questions about what classes to register for, how to accept or defer admission and/or scholarships, housing, and financial aid.
