STUDENT OF THE QUARTER WINNERS FOR QUARTER 2 AT VAN BUREN TECH CENTER!
REAL LIFE TRIANGLE PROJECT--GEOMETRY
The Geometry students used protractors and tape measures to find the measurement of 2 sides or angles of right triangles that they saw in the auditorium or gym. They used these measurements to practice applying trigonometric functions.
THESE SCHOLARSHIPS ARE DUE TO MRS. TYLER BY APRIL 12th!
SPECIAL SPEAKER IN CHEMISTRY and ASTRONOMY
We had a great guest speaker in Chemistry and Astronomy this week. Kenneth Cecire from
Notre Dameโs QuarkNet center came to help us understand subatomic particles. We began
what we call the master class, which involves high particle physics/chemistry research. We
learned about CERN, and how a fixed target experiment finds subatomic particles. The
students learned the concept of the beam experiment by participating in a marble experiment.
They used one marble to simulate the beam pipe with three marble targets at the other side of
the lab table. They then proceeded to conduct four rounds of 10 trials each to see how difficult it
is to find subatomic particles (Hit one of the three). We then created a class histogram of the
โhitsโ. Once the histogram was done we then dove into math to find the diameter of the particle.
The last step was to create an all day comparison of hits using a mean/deviation graph.
ARE YOU INTERESTED IN LEARNING ABOUT PARTICLE PHYSICS?
MSVMA District 6 Choral Festival
On Wednesday, February 28, 2024 the Watervliet Treble Choir and the Watervliet
Concert Choir participated in the MSVMA District 6 Choral Festival. The festival was

On February 23rd, Marissa Lovell, Sophie Grear, Sydnee Enders, and Hayden Arnosky attended the SMC Flute Clinic Day. These four spent the day with flutists Jessica Wu and Dr. Anna DeCou learning all things flute-related. The day culminated with a concert featuring the 30 member flute choir and the SMC Jazz & Symphonic Bands!
The High School Band will be attending MSBOA District VI Band & Orchestra festival on Tuesday, March 5th at 1:45 pm in the Paw Paw High School auditorium. The band will be evaluated on three prepared pieces (a march, a piece off the required list, and a selected piece) as well as sight-reading. All are welcome to attend this free event.
KIA HIGH SCHOOL ART SHOW
WHS Panthers got 12 pieces into the KIA High School Show. This is the highest number WHS has EVER gotten into this elite show.
Hereโs a list of our students who were accepted to this yearโs exhibit:
There will be an in-person award ceremony on Friday, March 29 starting at 6:00 pm at the KIA. The HSAS exhibit will open to the public at the conclusion of the ceremony. The opening weekend of the exhibition (March 30 and 31) is a free weekend at the KIA for everyone. You, the artist, will get free admission to the KIA during gallery open hours for the length of the show (March 30 - April 28); just let the person at the Information Desk know your name and that you are in the HSAS. The juror for the 2024 HSAS is Professor Faisal AbduโAllah, Ph.D. Faisal is the Professor of Printmaking; Chazen Family Distinguished Chair in Art at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He was part of KIAโs โUnmasking Masculinity for the 21st Centuryโ exhibit in 2022.
FIELD TRIP TO COOK POWER PLANT
Thank you to Mrs. Mosher who scheduled and supervised an optional field trip for welding to the Cook Power Plant in Bridgman in Tuesday. Students have also had the opportunity to attend trips this month to SMC for welding and robotics day and also visited Stryker to learn about the medical manufacturing field.
WATERVLIET HIGH SCHOOL INCREASES FAFSA COMPLETION
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a form completed by current and prospective college students to determine their eligibility for student financial aid. Each year, WHS makes a major push for as many seniors as possible to complete their FAFSA based on the benefits listed below:
Filing the FAFSA is the only way for students to find out if they are eligible for the Michigan Achievement Scholarship or other state financial aid.
FAFSA is the only way to unlock the Pell Grant, other federal financial aid, and most institutional and community-based financial aid.
The completion rate in Michigan for the 2023-24 FAFSA year is currently at 53.7%, compared to 52.3% at the same time in the 2022-23 cycle.
Michigan currently ranks 30th out of 50 states in the percentage of high school graduates filing the FAFSA.
FAFSA completion rates are lower, on average, in high-poverty districts than in low-poverty districts.
In Michigan, approximately 51% of students are eligible for Pell Grants, meaning over 20,000 seniors who may have been awarded a Pell Grant did not receive one.
The average Pell Grant awarded to a student from the class of 2022 was $4,539. Michigan left over $93.5 million in unused federal financial aid on the table last year.
FAFSA completion is strongly associated with postsecondary enrollment: Nationally, 92% of seniors who completed the FAFSA enrolled by the November following graduation vs. 51% who did not complete a FAFSA.
Low-income seniors are 127% more likely to enroll in postsecondary education directly after high school, compared to peers who do not complete the form.
This year, 77% of the seniors in the Class of 2024 have already completed a FAFSA! This is a significant increase over the number of FAFSAs completed the same time last year by the Class of 2023. Several factors have contributed to this increase:
Mr. Christopher Coburn, the Watervliet/Coloma adviser from the Michigan College Access Network has been meeting with seniors and their families in order to offer assistance with FAFSA completion. He is able to meet with students during the school day and has also offered a weekend session for parents.
WHS received funding for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Completion Challenge Grant. In collaboration with the the Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential (MiLEAP) and the Michigan College Access Network (MCAN), the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) is implemented the FAFSA Completion Challenge Grant to encourage districts to support students in completing the FAFSA form as part of planning for studentsโ post-secondary education. Review below for district eligibility and application details.
Students have also been recognized through social media, throughout the school, and in the Panther Parent newsletter for the completion of their FAFSA. On Feb 23rd, any senior with a completed FAFSA had the opportunity to pie the teacher/staff member of their choice in the face at a school wide assembly.
It is the aim that ALL WHS Panthers have the opportunity to pursue the post secondary training of their choice in furthering their education and income potential. The FAFSA is the first step towards realizing those future dreams and goals!

When needing help with something even if it isnโt her job or responsibility she is willing to help others understand what is happening. My favorite class would have to be one of dual enrollment classes which is Nutrition and Dietary Therapy. I find it interesting to learn about what the body should consume and the right amount. Iโm currently not doing any sports or clubs. In my free time, I like to either go to the gym or spend time with my family. I am proud to be a Panther because of the opportunities they have given us to an early start on college education. My favorite subject would have to be Yearbook. In this class, I've learned how to take amazing photos and have built a family of my peers and my teacher. In my free time, I enjoy either reading or spending time with my friends. You can also catch me on the soccer field after school some days, preparing for this season. What makes me the most proud to be a Panther would be some of the amazing members of our staff. With their efforts to not only be their teachers to their students but also people they can depend on. After graduation, I plan on attending Lake Michigan College.
PBIS AREA OF FOCUS
This week, all 3rd hour teachers will be reviewing the expectations for all students in the hallways. Please review these expectations with your child for the coming week!
THE DANGERS OF VAPING
Dear Watervliet High School Parent: February 27, 2024
Recently a small number of students have been disciplined for vaping or being in possession of a vape on school property at Watervliet High School.
When a student is vaping on school property, not only does it put the studentโs health at risk, but it also violates both WPS policy and Michigan State Law.
Our #1 priority at WHS is your childโs safety. In response to the vaping that has occurred, WHS is offering a parent informational session on the dangers of vaping on Monday, March 25th at 6:00 PM in the media center courtesy of the Berrien County Health Department. This presentation is about the dangers of marijuana and vaping. The presentation has been successful in other school districts in our area. We encourage you to attend this presentation.
In the meantime, we ask that you please have a conversation with your child about the dangers of vaping. To support you, you will find information on the backside of this letter that was accessed from the Berrien County Health Department.
Thank you for your attention to this concern.
If my parents and other adults in my life can smoke, then I should be able to smoke too.
Current research shows that marijuana has a negative impact on brain development and the mental health of young people, including anxiety, problem-solving, and memory.
Young people should abstain or wait to start using marijuana. Besides, it is illegal for anyone under 21. Learn more about the marijuana laws.
Marijuana is natural and healthy! Iโm glad I can relieve stress using this outlet instead of alcohol or other drugs.
Marijuana smoke can damage your lungs and cardiovascular system (heart and blood vessels) just like tobacco. People who smoke marijuana inhale deeper and hold the smoke for longer, which increases tar exposure when compared to cigarettes.
The ingredients and strengths of marijuana are not exactly the same from plant to plant. Right now, thereโs no way to know for sure what kind and how much of a chemical youโre getting from home-grown plants.
Additionally, levels of THC in marijuana continue to increase. In 1995, THC (full name tetrahydrocannabinol, marijuanaโs main psychoactive ingredient) was 4%, and in 2014 the average THC level rose to 12%.
With a vape, I wonโt have the negative impacts of smoking so I donโt have to worry.
While vaping may seem healthier than smoking, you still inhale chemicals in your lungs that may cause respiratory issues. There are higher concentrations of THC when you are dabbing or using hash, and vaping may produce a more dangerous high than smoking.
Well, if smoking or vaping isnโt good for me, I can always eat brownies or something.
Unfortunately edibles have their own risks too. The delay in the high caused by THC can cause people to ingest too much marijuana, which may result in a prolonged high and that could include hallucinations, paranoia, panic attacks, or trigger a psychotic episode.
My classmates are all talking about how marijuana isnโt harmful and how everyone uses marijuana.
The way that people think about the health risks of marijuana has changed a lot over the years, partially because of the legalization of marijuana. Marijuana is also one of the first drugs a teen may be offered, usually before the age of 15.
Twenty five percent of high school students think that half or more of the students in their grade used marijuana sometime in the past month. However, 70% of high school students in Berrien County have not tried marijuana. While you may think many of your peers are using cannabis products, the statistics show this is not the case.
The bottom line is just because marijuana is legal doesnโt mean that it isnโt harmful! Many harmful substances, including alcohol and cigarettes, are available to the public. Many negative effects of marijuana donโt show up until later in life. Any kind of smoking causes lung damage, and marijuana smoke is just as harmful as nicotine smoke. More immediately, marijuana can influence mood disorders like anxiety and depression, which can affect performance in school and sports.
STAFF SPOTLIGHT--MS. FLETCHER
I was born in Westland Michigan, but am a navy brat. I grew up traveling the world and lived in three countries and 8 states by the time I was 13. At 13 we settled down in Goshen Indiana, where I finished my education and finished high school in the top five of my class. I earned a full ride scholarship to IU where I earned my bachelor's degree in teaching with a concentration in science with majors in: Earth, Space, Physics, Chemistry and Physical Science. I then went on after a couple years of teaching to earn my masters in administration from Ball State University. During this time I was also working on my masters in astrophysics at Notre Dame, and continue to work and conduct research in particle physics as well as astrophysics. I am privileged enough to continue my research for the past 17 years and get to invite a current Junior to the research project every year over the summer months. They are able to not only get paid, but they earn college credit as well as learn about all areas of physics research. I am currently teaching astronomy and chemistry and enjoy every moment I get with the students as they are extremely eager to learn and are so caring and attentive. I am proud to be a WHS Panther because it feels like family! All my students and families have always been so kind to myself and family and I see it in their actions in the community as well! This community is full of love.
I enjoy camping, hiking, going to the lake, fishing and well just everything outdoors. I also enjoy binge watching shows with my kids and just having family time as we know it all goes so quick. I am a mother of four, Conor 19, Mason 17, Finly 7, and Bella 5. They are my world and keep me very busy throughout the week. We love playing board and card games as a group and spend a lot of time cooking as a family. You may not know that I once accidentally set my college lab on fire (I still say it was my lab partner...lol), or exploded pure potassium in a creek in college;-) In all I am a nerd of nerds and love every moment of life.

THANK YOU TOM GEAR!
On Friday night at Watervliet-Coloma varsity basketball games, the Panthers presented a plaque to Tom Gear in recognition of his many years of service to Watervliet Panther Athletics. Tom has been announcing at varsity events for the Panthers since 1997. During that time, he has announced for every sport, although his primary role has been as football and basketball announcer. Athletic Director Ken Dietz says, โThe Watervliet Athletic Department is extremely fortunate to have someone like Tom who is so dedicated to our students, athletic program, and community.โ Panther Athletics looks forward to having Tom in the announcerโs seat at our events for many more years. Thank you, Tom, and Congratulations.

We want you accessing your child's Canvas account! Please take the following steps so that you can be checking on his/her grades on a regular basis.
Steps for parents to create a parent Canvas account.
Obtain Student Pairing Code
Sign up for an account through your phone app or on the computer using an email address.
Parents should go to www.watervlietps.org and click on the link "Canvas for Parents" in the middle of the homepage. Here is the direct link: https://www.
canvas-resources. Here you will find the screenshot instructions, a 7 slide presentation and brief videos on navigating the parent portal, checking grades, viewing assignments and accessing teacher feedback.
Students need to create the pairing code for their parents and it is only valid for 7 days.
If you are having difficulty obtaining the student pairing code, teachers have access to this information within their course by going to People and clicking on the 3 dots in the upper right corner and choosing Export Pairing Codes. Again, these pairing codes are only good for 7 days. Quick way for teachers get this code to a parent when communicating with them.
