A Message from Mrs. Gallegos & Mrs. Ring A Message from Mrs. Gallegos & Mrs. Ring

Greetings, Barrows Families,

Our staff had an amazing day of professional development on Tuesday and left feeling refreshed and ready to welcome your students back for a great three-day week! I hope our families enjoyed the extra time together, too!

It’s hard to believe that our first trimester closes in just two weeks! Our students are already showing so much growth, and we appreciate your partnership in making sure they are at school and on time each day. Every day matters, and every Shining Star matters!

For our kindergarten families, a quick reminder that our school guidelines for staying home when sick may look a little different from what you are used to in preschool. Students should stay home if they have a fever or have vomited within the past 24 hours. As students recover, they do not necessarily need to feel 100% to return to school, provided they are well enough to participate in the school day and meet our health guidelines. Missing too many days can make it harder for students to keep up academically and stay connected socially.

Please take advantage of the vacations and long weekends built into our school calendar when planning family trips, and avoid scheduling vacations during school days. We miss our students when they are away, and each child is an important part of our Barrows community! If there are barriers making it difficult for your child to attend school regularly or arrive on time, please reach out. We are always happy to talk through ways we can help.

The end of October is a busy time at Barrows! Please scroll through the sections below to catch all the upcoming events, activities, and opportunities for our families. We are especially excited for our 2026 Monster Mash next Friday! Just a reminder that Monster Mash costumes are for the after-school event, not for the school day. Keep reading for guidance about our new optional Costume day on Friday, October 30!

A Few Important Reminders

  • Staff Stopover: Check out our next Staff Stopover, featuring Shaquanda Brown, our METCO Coordinator and School Adjustment Counselor (SAC)!

  • Honoring Our Veterans: Does your Shining Star have a veteran in the family you would like to honor this Veterans Day? Check out Mrs. Becker’s announcement below for details.

  • PTO & Community News: Take a few minutes to explore this section. We’ve added MANY new community events and volunteer opportunities!

  • Friday Treats Are Coming! Starting October 30, 2nd-5th grade tudents can purchase a special Friday snack for $1 at lunch! 🍪 Scroll down to the Food & Cafeteria News section for all the details.
  • Join Us for Our Next PTO Meeting: Tuesday, October 20, at 7:00 p.m. in the Barrows Library or join us on Zoom. Mrs. Ring will share Barrows’ 2026 MCAS results!
  • Fall Conference Sign-Ups: Keep an eye out! Teachers will email families on Monday, October 26, with sign-up times for fall conferences. Families are asked to select from the available time slots. Please note that alternate conference times outside the district-scheduled options cannot be accommodated.

  • Thank you to our parents who helped repaint our black top lines! They look great!

  • New This Year: Costume Day! Students are invited to wear a school-appropriate costume on Friday, October 30! To keep the day safe, comfortable, and focused on learning, please follow these guidelines:

    • No inflatable costumes, masks, makeup, or face paint.

    • No fake weapons or props of any kind.

    • Costumes must allow students to participate comfortably in classroom activities, run and play at recess, and take part in PE.

    • Please choose costumes that are appropriate for an elementary school setting and not scary. We want all our Shining Stars to feel safe and comfortable throughout the day!

A helpful tip: Keep it simple! Anything that can be easily removed or misplaced may not make it home, and we want everyone ready for a fun Halloween weekend. Thank you for helping us keep costume day fun, safe, and manageable for everyone!

May your weekend be filled with fall fun and plenty of rest!

Warmly,
Alissa & Annemarie

Ms. Brown, METCO Coordinator/School Adjustment Counselor (SAC)

Hello Barrows Families!

My name is Shaquanda Brown, I am entering my fourth year at Barrows as the METCO Coordinator/School Adjustment Counselor (SAC). In my SAC role, I support students’ social, emotional, and behavioral well-being so they can feel safe, connected and ready to learn. This can happen through individual check-ins, small groups, and collaboration with teachers, families, other school staff, and outside providers. My goal is to help students navigate challenges, build coping skills and problem-solving skills, and develop healthy relationships to be successful at school. My favorite part of the day are the walks and chats in the hallway as a student walks back to class or specials. I also co-facilitate our Barrows Mentoring Program with Mrs. Lanzo, which connects students with other adults in the building to create and maintain strong, positive relationships between school staff and students.

In my METCO Coordinator role, I meet with Boston-resident students weekly to help foster a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive school experience for Barrows students and families in the METCO program. I serve as the bridge between students, school staff, families, and the broader school community ensuring these students feel supported throughout their educational journey. As a former METCO student, who went to Marblehead, I understand and know the importance of having a designated staff advocate. My hope is that our Boston-residents feel that they are important and are a valued part of our school community.

I am usually on the blacktop in the morning, so feel free to say hello or send me an email!!

Thank you,

Shaquanda Brown, LICSW, SAC, GC-C

2nd Grade Science: Watching the Spinach Crop Grow 2nd Grade Science: Watching the Spinach Crop Grow

Second graders learned what happened after the spinach seeds they planted open. They took advantage of a beautiful afternoon making observations of Stage 4.

Stage 1: The dry seed soaks up water from the moist soil and swells. The water switches on the seed's stored energy and tells it that it's time to grow. What you'll see: Nothing to see yet — just keep the soil damp.

Stage 2: The root breaks out. The seed coat cracks open and a tiny root pushes out first, growing downward to anchor the plant and start pulling in more water. What you'll see: Still underground. Resist digging to check!

Stage 3: The hook pushes up. A pale, bent stem forms a hook and shoulders its way up through the soil, dragging the folded seed leaves behind it so they don't get scraped. What you'll see: Look for little green loops just breaking the surface.

Stage 4: Seed leaves open. The stem straightens and two long, narrow seed leaves (cotyledons) unfold. They look almost like blades of grass — not like spinach at all yet. What you'll see: Pairs of skinny green leaves in rows: your seeds are up.

Reading Public Schools is a METCO District

METCO unites suburban towns with Boston to engage in a reciprocal learning partnership in support of all students. Because of this, every child who attends school in Reading Public Schools is a METCO student and every parent or guardian who has a student in RPS is a part of the METCO community.

"Since its founding during the peak of the Civil Rights Movement, the METCO program has enrolled tens of thousands of Boston students of color in predominately white school districts, creating the opportunity for those districts to experience the advantages of learning and working in a racially and ethnically diverse setting."

Donate Diapers to Area Families in Need--Drop off Box in Barrows Lobby through Oct. 19h

SNAP & WIC benefits do not cover diapers and have faced deep cuts in recent years. As a result, many families must make difficult decisions between food, rent, or clean bottoms. But you can help babies in the Metro-Boston area stay happy, clean, and dry by donating to the annual Metro-Boston Diaper Drive.

The Drive will run from October 4 - 19th. Please visit mbdiapers.org to donate or click directly on the links to the Amazon and Target registries. The Metro-Boston Diaper Drive donates all diapers to the Somerville WIC office, which, as of July, serves 19 towns: Arlington, Bedford, Belmont, Burlington, Cambridge, Everett, Lexington, Lincoln, Malden, Medford, North Reading, Reading, Somerville, Stoneham, Wakefield, Watertown, Wilmington, Winchester, and Woburn. Arrival

  • Please drive slowly up Edgemont to keep everyone safe; remember, it is a ONE-WAY during the school day.
  • Do not park in the indented section by the gym. This is the "kiss & go" area for a quick drop-off.
  • Doors open at 8:15 and close at 8:25. Your child needs to be in their seat by 8:25 AM. If your child arrives to school after the doors have closed, they must come to the front door and be marked tardy.
  • The Staff Parking Lot is for staff only and off limits to all pedestrians from arrival-dismissal for the safety of all. Please respect this important aspect of our campus.

Dismissal:

  • At dismissal time, there is no live pick-up in the driveway except for students who take the bus. Kindergarteners exit the building at 2:40 PM. The rest of the students dismiss at 2:45 PM from the same doors they enter in the morning.

As a safety reminder, the staff parking lot is staff-only. We respectfully ask that caregivers park along the streets. With our students exiting from their external doors in the parking lot, having cars drive in and out is not safe. You need to walk around the school on the blacktop to the back. Thanks for helping us out.

Ready to Play the Best Way

Please do not have your children wear flip-flops. Sneakers are best, but flip-flops are dangerous when running at recess (and Crocs aren't great).

Dogs and Puppies on School Grounds

School Committee policy prohibits dogs on school grounds as much as we all love dogs and puppies and as much fun as it is walking them. If you'd like to walk your dog as part of your pick-up routine, the dog has to stay off school property. If you'd like your child to walk to you on the sidewalk or to the driveway entrances at dismissal so you can wait with your dog, please make that plan with them.
