Waters Families,

Over the past two weeks, classrooms have started engaging students in a series of lessons to serve as the foundation for establishing school-wide behavior norms. The lessons vary by grade level, but all follow the same basic three-step process.

  1. Understanding Waters' Mission
  2. Students use vision boards, word art or skits that show both appropriate and inappropriate behavior in certain spaces (classroom, hallway, etc.) to apply Waters' mission.
  3. Coming to a consensus as a homeroom of the most important parts of what Waters school-wide behavior norms should be.

Once all of the classroom input is collected, the Climate & Culture Team will create 8-10 draft school-wide norms based on the students' input. The draft norms will be shared again with students and the student body will choose 3-5 norms for the entire school to adopt. Please keep an eye on classroom newsletters or check in with your student's teacher on specifics for their class.

Thank you to the over 120 parents and community members that responded to the Continuous Improvement Work Plan (CIWP) Survey. The staff also filled out a similar survey earlier in January. Based on the feedback shared through these two surveys, as well as IAR data, Waters will have six CIWP Working Groups:

  • Acceleration (Providing Opportunities for Increased Rigor for Students that Have Demonstrated Readiness)
  • Systems to Communicate Student Needs to Families
  • Diverse Learners (With a Focus on Reading)
  • Fine & Performing Arts (Arts Integration & Partnerships)
  • Hispanic Students (With a Focus on Reading)
  • Understanding the Student Experience (Schoolwide Collection & Analysis of Data on Students' Learning Experiences)

The working groups will be a combination of teachers and parents to discuss milestones that the staff have put together to support students in these areas through the CIWP. The first round will take place on Wednesday, April 1 from 4:15 - 5:15 PM. Please use this Signup Genius if you would like to join one of the groups.

With kindness,

Mr. R.
