WHAT WE'VE BEEN WORKING ON:

Fifth Grade: During February, 5th grade artists created a design in a quarter of a circle that was then pieced together with other artist's work to create a larger collaborative piece. Some of the requirements were to include their name in one of the spaces and fill the remaining spaces with Zentangle patterns. They worked on showing VARIETY with their patterns as well as CONTRAST. For example, if they did a pattern with curved lines, they were asked to use a pattern with straight lines next to it. Some patterns had parts colored in with black to make them stand out. As a final touch, color was added using colored pencils. Artists were able to choose between three different color schemes and were expected to show a gradient in at least one area when coloring. These were then cut to size and assembled by class.

Fourth Grade: During February, artists have been learning about Wisconsin born painter, Georgia O’Keeffe. O’Keeffe is best known for her paintings of enlarged blossoms and New Mexico inspired landscapes and skulls. Artists designed their own artwork inspired by O’Keeffe style. They traced their line drawings with glue and colored them with chalk pastel, using an analogous color scheme.

Third Grade: Third grade artists learned about the landscape painter Ted Harrison and his use of atmospheric perspective and abstract colors. Students drew landscapes and added implied texture with crayon using complementary colors to different areas of their drawing. When adding color with watercolor paint artists created tints and tones or lights and darks by adjusting the amount of water used.
