You might not be able to tell based on the temperatures, but the season is changing. I have told family and friends that South Texas has two seasons, hot and not quite as hot. While that might be true, the changing season I am referring to is the changing season of student attitudes. The first few weeks of school many students are either getting used to middle school life for the first time or returning to the skills they had developed the year before. By now, most of them are comfortable that they know what they are doing. That comfort level is good, but it can bring a new challenge. Some students begin to relax their habits. Study skills become less important to them and rules are often challenged. This is why many people refer to October as Shock-tober. This is yet another area where we could use your help. We can monitor and encourage students to maintain the self-discipline they need for success, but we will never know your child as well as you do. Please continue to show your students why they need to stay focused. Ask them what they are working on and what they are finding challenging. If your child tells you they are struggling in a class, please reach out to the teacher to be sure they know and can support your child. One universal truth about education is that students who are supported at school and at home feel better about meeting the challenges they face.

What does it mean to Self-Direct?

Self-Direction is the ability and learned skill to cast a vision of future goals and then take intentional steps toward who, where, and what we want to be. Instead of focusing on things to control or avoid, we emphasize our responsibility to make positive choices related to our emotions, attitudes, and actions.

Why focus on Self-Direction?

  • Self-Direction strengthens relationships. Self-Direction helps to grow social skills and develop meaningful, positive relationships with others.
  • Self-Direction teaches personal responsibility. Learning to Self-Direct teaches students to take responsibility for their own actions.
  • Self-Direction helps us to regulate emotions: Self-Direction empowers students to regulate their impulses and emotional responses to situations and circumstances in their life.
