COUNSELOR'S CORNER
Zones of Regulation Curriculum
We are excited to introduce the Zones of Regulation, a curriculum to support students' social and emotional development and regulation skills! Please see the attached handout for detailed information about Zones. Students will learn about the Zones concepts during classroom guidance and intervention times. Please be on the lookout for future materials sent home that will help you incorporate the Zones of Regulation at home.
Empower Me!
In December, the School Counselor will teach a lesson called “Empower Me!” on personal safety awareness. This program, created by the Children’s Safety Center, is provided to students in grades K-5 and is designed to help children learn about personal safety in an empowering and positive way.
Topics covered include:
Checking first with the adult in charge before going anywhere with anyone
Identifying five trusted adults who make up their safety net
Listening to their “uh-oh” or gut feeling
Saying “no” to anyone who asks them to break a safety rule
Understanding that they are in charge of their body and that they have the right to tell someone if they don’t want to be touched and the right to keep their private parts private.
These lessons are one step toward prevention, however family involvement and ongoing personal safety conversations have an even stronger impact. Other educational resources and materials are available at zeroabuseproject.org. It is a grown-up’s responsibility to keep children safe, and we take that responsibility very seriously. If you have any questions about the Empower Me! presentations, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Thank you - Joleen Nutter, K-8 Connect School Counselor
Christmas Resource for Families: Miracle on 14th Street (through The Compassion Coalition of NWA)
Since 2009 volunteers have come together to offer our neighbors some warmth and hope for the Holidays.
On the Saturday before Christmas, December 21st this year, we'll welcome 300 families through our parking lot to receive a dozen cookies, a bag of groceries, household paper supplies, a gift card to purchase a gift for each child, and new coats for each child.
Total donations for this one day event is more than $73,000.00.
An estimated $1 Million in gifts has been donated since 2009!
Please email or call Joleen Nutter, K-8 Connect School Counselor, if you're interested in receiving help for Christmas through the Miracle on 14th St. program. (jnutter@sdale.org, 479-334-4656)
