Quarter 1 Honor Roll Recipients
We are so proud of our students who demonstrated hard work, dedication, and a commitment to academic excellence during the first quarter. To earn Honor Roll, students must achieve a 3.0 GPA or higher, and these scholars have truly risen to the challenge.
Their effort and perseverance reflect the values we strive to inspire every day in our school community. Please join us in celebrating their success—keep up the amazing work!
Classroom Highlights - Science
Exploring, Measuring, Creating: Pesto the IB Way
Dr. Soar's class demonstrated true IB Learner qualities by exploring the entire pesto-making process using fresh basil from our hydroponics system. They asked questions, carefully measured and prepared ingredients, and collaborated to create a delicious dish together.
By engaging hands-on with science and food, they balanced curiosity with practical skills — and showed responsibility by enjoying every last bite.
A perfect example of being Inquirers who are asking questions, and being Knowledgeable as they are learning about what it takes to create such a great dish! Some were even Risk-Takers as they had never tried Pesto before!
Curiosity Ignites Learning
Mrs. Tenney's science class put the IB Learner Traits into action as they explored how matter and energy move through an ecosystem during a “zombie fire” simulation.
As Inquirers, they investigated different types of “fuel,” testing how various materials burn—some igniting quickly while others smolder slowly, just like real zombie fires that can reignite underground. Their curiosity drove them to ask questions, make predictions, and observe patterns in how energy is released.
Demonstrating the trait of Thinkers, students analyzed how energy stored in plant matter is transformed into heat and light during combustion. They also recognized how carbon-based molecules cycle back into the atmosphere, deepening their understanding of how zombie fires influence ecosystems, carbon cycling, and climate.
By engaging in hands-on exploration, students acted as Knowledgeable learners, building meaningful scientific understanding of environmental systems and gaining insight into the complex processes that shape our world.
Learning about Modern Day Scientist
Our 6th grade science class embraced key IB Learner Traits as they researched and presented on modern-day scientists!
As Inquirers, students explored the work and discoveries of scientists in fields like biology, physics, environmental science, and technology, asking questions and seeking deeper understanding.
They showed themselves to be Knowledgeable by learning about the challenges and contributions these scientists make to our world.
Through presenting their research, our students practiced being Communicators, effectively sharing ideas and information with their classmates.
This project also encouraged students to be Thinkers, analyzing the impact of scientific discoveries on society and the environment.
We’re proud of our learners for demonstrating curiosity, confidence, and a passion for discovery as they connect with the innovators shaping our future!

Celebrating Latin Culture Through Art & Performance!
Our students have been diving deep into the vibrant world of Hispanic and Latin artists—learning about their unique styles, techniques, and cultural influences. Inspired by these creators, they produced artwork that beautifully mimicked and honored those artistic traditions. The creativity and attention to detail were truly impressive!
In addition to art exploration, a group of students put together an incredible performance celebrating the richness of Latin culture. Their showcase included lively dancing, joyful music, fascinating cultural facts, and special tributes paying homage to the tradition of Quinceañeras and iconic Latin singers such as Selena, Jennifer Lopez, and Shakira.
We are proud of all our students for embracing these learning experiences with curiosity, respect, and enthusiasm. Their work highlighted not only artistic expression, but also the IB learner traits of open-mindedness, reflection, and cultural appreciation.
¡Excelente trabajo, estudiantes!
We may be an IB school, but we still love STEM!
Our students demonstrated essential IB Learner Traits during their hands-on STEM projects in the library. As Collaborators and Communicators, they worked in groups to share ideas and solve problems together. Their curiosity and enthusiasm showed them to be true Inquirers, exploring science, technology, engineering, and math concepts through active experimentation.
By thinking critically and creatively, they embodied the trait of Thinkers, while showing Reflectiveness by learning from their successes and challenges throughout the process.
We’re proud to see our students engage deeply and embody the spirit of lifelong learning through these exciting STEM experiences!
CyberDragons' Eye on the Prize
After a full day of presenting our robots, showcasing our innovation project, and competing in the robot game, we are excited to share some great news—our CyberDragons won the Rising All-Star Award!
While we did not advance to the state championships this year, our team showed tremendous growth, teamwork, and perseverance. With everything they’ve learned this season, next year is already looking incredibly promising.
We are so proud of our CyberDragons!
Dillon_HFD @ the Den
We had a special guest at our school—Dillon, the mascot from Hartford Athletics!
Dillon made our day by handing out high school perfect attendance awards to some very deserving students. Of course, he brought along the newest hardware—the 2025 Hartford Athletics Championship Trophy!
He didn’t stop there! He also visited a few classrooms, helped the front office by making some copies, and even took a moment to check on our hydroponics system.
It was exciting to have Dillon here spreading school spirit, encouragement, and a little extra fun throughout the building. Thanks for stopping by, Dillon—we can’t wait to see you again!

Celebrating Our Financial Star Learners
Congratulations to Mrs. Tomlinson’s Quarter 1 Star Students in Financial Algebra and Financial Business Finance!
These students demonstrated the IB Learner Traits by being Inquirers, showing curiosity and a desire to deepen their understanding of financial concepts. They were Thinkers, applying critical thinking skills to solve complex problems related to money management and business.
They also acted as Principled learners, showing responsibility and integrity in their work. Through collaboration and communication, they have exemplified the traits of Communicators and Caring individuals, supporting each other’s growth.
We celebrate their dedication and look forward to their continued success both in and out of the classroom!
IB LEARNER
December - Thinker
As thinkers, we use critical and creative thinking skills to analyze and take responsible action on complex problems. We exercise initiative in making reasoned, ethical decisions.
Developing thinking skills doesn’t just happen in school! Here are ways to inspire “thinking habits” outside of the classroom:
Ask your student to think of solutions to problems or challenges that they face – help them to think through these issues rather than telling them what to do right away. And then listen to them as they talk through their thinking.
To help them get started when they get stuck, ask them...
How should we begin?
What could be done differently?
In what other ways could this be done?
I hadn’t thought of that. Tell me more about it.
How did you figure that out?
Pose real-life challenges to your student:
”I’m not sure how we can be ready to leave for school on time. What can we do to make sure that happens?”
”I’m not sure how many snacks to buy for the party we are throwing. How can we estimate what we will need and how much it will all cost?”
ATTENDANCE MATTERS
A Special Morning With Hot 93.7’s DJ Buck!
We had an exciting morning on campus as DJ Buck from Hot 93.7 broadcasted his show live from our Principal’s office! His energy and positivity filled the school as he spent time meeting with our students and learning more about what makes International such a special place.
Throughout the morning, DJ Buck asked students why they love coming to our school and what inspired them to choose International. Their pride and enthusiasm truly shined.
He then brought the broadcast to our Cafeteria, where he spoke with students about the importance of attendance and why showing up every day matters for their success—both now and in the future. During the visit, he also recognized our Middle School Quarter 1 Perfect Attendance winners, celebrating their commitment and consistency.
We are grateful to our Principal of the Day. DJ Buck for spending the morning with us and for inspiring our students with his words and presence. What an unforgettable experience for our school community!
Attendance Matters ALL YEAR LONG!
- The school day is from 7:30-2:05.
- Scholars missing school for 3 cores or more will be considered absent for the day.
- Absences for more than 20 minutes from a class is considered an absence. Time will be noted in PowerSchool.
- Attendance matters for all classes so if a scholar can only attend 1 or 2 cores for an excused reason, we highly recommend they do.
Scholars absent more than 10% of the school year (18 days) are considered CHRONICALLY ABSENT by the State. The first 9 absences are excused with parent communication to the school. Ten and over will require specific documentation for reasons listed in the handbook (located on our website).
Scholars are allowed 2 mental health days that have to be reported as such when reporting the scholar's absence. These absences are in addition to the 9 excused by the State.
High School Scholars: Loss of credit for a class can occur after 12 absences (Half Year Courses) or 24 absences (Full Year Courses). Please contact your Counselor to discuss how credit can be recovered.
Please remind your child of the importance of waking up early and being in school daily. If you need support and resources please contact Ms. Gibson at sgibson@crec.org or their school counselor (listed below).
