From the Desk of the Superintendent

Dear Highlander School Community,

As we approach the end of the school year, this is a time for celebration, reflection and gratitude. Exhibitions, stepping stones, graduations, and awards celebrations are all the ways that Highlander recognizes the many milestones and achievements of our amazing students.

It brings us immense joy to witness the excitement, nerves, and boundless energy displayed by our students during this transformative period. The growth and blossoming of our students serve as a constant reminder of why we do what we do.

Looking ahead, we are preparing for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year during the summer break. Our summer school activities will provide academic support to students from our dedicated teachers and support staff. We are also thrilled to introduce our Educator Pathway Summer Program in partnership with the University of Rhode Island, offering high school students interested in education careers the chance to interview and secure a paid internship within our summer program. This incredible opportunity contributes to our efforts in building a diverse educator workforce.

As we navigate through the upcoming months, we are also mindful of the fiscal challenges that lie ahead. While not unique to Highlander, all school leaders are faced with significant challenges that will have an impact on the upcoming school year. As we navigate difficult financial times we strive to make decisions with the best interests of our students at heart.

As always, thank you for your continued support and partnership. Your feedback and input are highly valued, and we encourage all families to complete the parent/caregiver survey as we conclude the school year. (survey: https://forms.gle/WNnc2F4bj9m3R8WG7)

Your thoughts and suggestions are vital as we strive to provide the highest quality education for our students.

Warm regards,

Simona Simpson Thomas

Superintendent

Highlander Receives TerraCorps and AmeriCorps Grants for Next Year!

Highlander in Providence has received a grant to support bringing on AmeriCorps members to work in our classrooms alongside teachers and in our afterschool program. This grant not only provides valuable support to the school, the member receives up to $7,000 in an education award upon completion of a year of service. This can be used for tuition or to pay student loans. We are also able to request some of these positions to be part-time but the education award would be prorated in that case.

Highlander in Warren received a grant to bring on a new TerraCorps member to pick up the great work our current TerraCorps member, Maddie Sowinski, has done in developing our hydroponics system and gardens. TerraCorps members receive the same benefits as AmeriCorps, including the education award.

Please be on the look out for these opportunities as we welcome our community to apply!

Did you know Highlander has many staff who began here as AmeriCorps members? They include Tatiana Iezzi, Ate Hernandez, Helena Johns, Alenoush Hagopian, and more!

Classroom Spotlight

Boston Scientific Trip

High School students had an incredible opportunity to visit Boston Scientific! They were exposed to many career pathways within STEM as well as other fields such as Sales, Marketing, Manufacturing, etc. The students learned a lot and were very engaged throughout the trip. The BSC staff were impressed by all their questions and enthusiasm.

Thank you to all that made this trip possible. Special thank you to Jeanne for providing this amazing connection and for the staff chaperones: Ada, Angela and Josh!

Hope you all enjoy the pictures :)
