Meet Mary Weir!
You may see Mary making coffee in the student lounge or greeting students at the front desk in the late afternoon or evening at the Hubbs Center. She was hired this winter and one of our work-study students (Ruth Lopez) interviewed her to get to know her.
Let's meet Mary!
1. How did you hear about working at the Hubbs Center, and how did you get started?
Mary learned about the Hubbs Center through a conversation with someone in Human Resources in St. Paul. She is currently completing her Master's in Education and will be graduating in May! This sparked her interest in joining the team.
2. Tell me about your role at the Hubbs Center.
Mary works at the front desk, where she serves as a "jack of all trades." She helps students with a variety of tasks, such as directing them to the right areas, answering questions, and offering guidance. She enjoys problem-solving and is passionate about supporting and welcoming students. In the future, she’s open to stepping in as a substitute teacher if needed, but her main focus is to provide assistance and create a supportive environment.
3. What do you like most about working here?
Mary loves everything about working at the Hubbs Center, especially the people and the positive, goal-oriented work environment. She appreciates the opportunity to collaborate with forward-thinking staff and work with students who are motivated to achieve their goals.
4. What challenges have you experienced in your role?
One of the biggest challenges Mary has faced is the feeling of helplessness when she’s unable to assist everyone—especially people calling from out of state who wish to take classes at the Hubbs Center. She wishes that everyone had equal access to education, particularly since many classes are full. However, she emphasizes that the challenge isn’t with the teachers, but rather with the system. Another challenge is the language barrier, as many students speak different languages and Mary isn’t fluent in all of them.
6. Tell me a little about your background, interests, family, and any volunteer work you do.
Mary has three children and she grew up in St. Paul area. She is passionate about working in public education and feels fulfilled by giving back to the community. Volunteering is something she values deeply as it allows her to serve others, and influence them in a positive way. She is always eager to learn from others, and outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her family and children.

Harriet Tubman
by Eloise Greenfield
Signe Ilstrup's evening College Readiness class recently read this poem about Harriet Tubman as part of their work for African American History Month last month and would like to share it here as we now celebrate National Women's History Month!
Harriet Tubman didn't take no stuff
Wasn't scared of nothing neither
Didn't come in this world to be no slave
And wasn't going to stay one either
"Farewell!" she sang to her friends one night
She was mighty sad to leave 'em
But she ran away that dark, hot night
Ran looking for her freedom
She ran to the woods and she ran through the woods
With the slave catchers right behind her
And she kept on going till she got to the North
Where those mean men couldn't find her
Nineteen times she went back South
To get three hundred others
She ran for her freedom nineteen times
To save Black sisters and brothers
Harriet Tubman didn't take no stuff
Wasn't scared of nothing neither
Didn't come in this world to be no slave
And didn't stay one either
And didn't stay one either
Vocabulary
didn’t take no stuff – didn’t let people tell her what to do or let them say bad things to her
slave catchers – people who were paid money to catch runaway slaves and return them to their owners
till – until
