Alaska is reopening!! Why is it still important to wear a mask these days?

Every time we speak, exhale, sneeze, or cough, tiny droplets are released from our mouths and/or noses! (Did you know that when you sneeze, the droplets can go REALLY far...like 26 feet?? Yes, there are researchers who measure these things. Ewwww.)

By covering up our noses and mouths with a mask or face covering, many droplets get stuck in the fabric or paper of the mask, and, therefore, cannot end up on other people or surfaces that others touch!

This is important because many diseases can be spread this way, including COVID19. Because we often don't know that we might be carrying harmful germs, wearing a mask can protect others from OUR germs.

So, why not wear a mask when you are near people (beyond your immediate household), and in public spaces? It's free and easy to do.

A message regarding the Fourth of July celebration for 2020!

While it is incredibly disappointing to learn of another consequence that the pandemic is bestowing on our beloved community, we must charge ahead with optimism that next year's celebration will bring about great things.

This years theme is to "Create Community". While the necessary changes to Wrangell's most cherished community event might lead some to believe the overarching theme is no longer relevant or attainable, in reality it is more important than ever. There are many ways in which we can create community safely with our families and friends that are in our social bubble.

Beyond our immediate circles there are opportunities to reach out in support of our community overall. Check out the Wrangell Chamber of Commerce's website for information related to the 2021 Fourth of July opportunities and consider putting energy towards our future celebrations.

We understand this road has been long, we know people are tired, and we share in your frustrations. It is because of that that we need to lift each other up and look towards a brighter and better future for all. Let's work together to keep our community safe and healthy over the 4th of July and throughout the Summer. This too shall pass.

A guide to making decisions around group activities and large gatherings!

Any gathering of people confers risk for communicable disease transmission, and the risk increases with increasing numbers. Larger gatherings offer many opportunities for person-to-person contact and therefore pose an elevated risk for COVID19 transmission.

Check out the State of Alaska's website for details on gatherings and event info. The graphic below helps reinforce the risks associated with different types of activity.

When, what, how to clean after COVID...

The CDC recommends cleaning all “high-touch” surfaces, such as phones, keyboards, tablets, counters, tabletops, doorknobs, bathroom fixtures, toilets, and bedside tables, every day. Avoid using other people's phones, desks, offices, or other work tools and equipment, when possible. If necessary, clean and disinfect them before and after use.

If you have affirmed a positive case of COVID19 in your home or facility it is important that you follow the Center for Disease Control guidelines. We encourage you to reach out to the State Public Health department for specific details. Petersburg Public Health Office 907-772-4611.

Be sure to protect yourself to the maximum degree possible; mask up and glove up.
