Unified Sports at LOHS

Wanting to bring change and another way for students to get involved, LOHS became a Unified Champion School in the spring of 2022. By collaborating with Special Olympics Oregon, LOHS has been able to create three different pillars that students can participate in and #choosetoinclude. Each pillar is a key part to sharing the message with the community about how to participate with those with disabilities. Students at LOHS can choose to participate in one, two, or all three pillars.

Pillar 1: LOHS Youth Leadership and Inclusion Committee - This is a student-led committee with adult support. These individuals will be broken up into subcommittees of the following and working to spread the word about Unified Programming at LOHS. Subcommittees include: Communications, Event Planning, Fundraising, Publications, Social Media, Sports Management, and others as seen fit.

Pillar 2: Unified Sports - You can participate within this program as being an athlete or a unified partner for the sport and running practices and competitions. Our first sport of the school year is bocce ball. Register by September 15th in order to participate! Practices only occur twice a week and competitions at least once per season. Follow the Unified Calendar to stay up to date!

Pillar 3: Whole School Engagement - Students and staff alike can participate in any of the events that are happening with the school and show your support for the program. Events such as Polar Plunge and Day of Inclusion.

If you have questions or would like more information, please contact Erin Cealey (cealeye@loswego.k12.or.us). Go Lakers!

Bus Driver Shortage

LOSD and state of Oregon is still experiencing a major shortage of available bus drivers this school year. This not only affects getting our students to and from school, but it is also continues to impact our high school sports teams after school. If we are unable to secure transportation for any of our teams to away contests, we will be sure to communicate with our coaches, athletes and their families as soon as possible. As a very last resort, athletes and/or parents/guardians may need to provide their own transportation to away contests. Thank you in advance for your patience.

Officials Shortage

The state of Oregon continues to experience a major shortage of available officials for high school athletics for the 2022-23 school year, including but not limited to football, soccer, volleyball and basketball. This shortage is significantly impacting our ability to schedule contests and could result in contests needing to be rescheduled or even cancelled. We will be sure to communicate with our coaches, athletes and their families if/when any schedule changes are made. We ask for your continued patience as we navigate through this difficult situation. For anyone interested in becoming an official, click here for more information.

Using Blankets to "Reserve" Seats

Please remember for the fall sports season and 2022-23 school year, permanently placing blankets in the stadium will not be allowed. However, if families and spectators want to arrive early each contest to put down blankets, they can do so, but the blankets must be removed following each contest. Any blankets that are left in the grandstands after a contest will be removed.

Our stadium is a community space with numerous activities and events taking place throughout the year, which require clean and welcoming access to the stadium grounds. When blankets are left for days, weeks and months at a time, it prevents our staff from properly cleaning and sanitizing the grandstands.

Thank you for your understanding and helping keep our stadium clean and sanitized. We're excited for a great year of Laker Athletics!

Academic Requirements for Athletic Eligibility

With the 2022-23 school year starting, please remember the academic requirements needed to maintain athletic eligibility for next school year. If you are thinking about dropping a class, please remember that LOHS student-athletes must be currently enrolled in and passing at least 5 credit-earning classes in order to remain eligible for competition.

Student-Athlete School Attendance Reminder

We want all our Lakers to succeed on the playing field, but they must do so in the classroom first. Please remember that per LOSD Athletics policy:

“Attendance at school for the entire day is a prerequisite for participation in contests or practices. School related activities or appointments with prior approval by the administration do not fall under this regulation. Emergency situations may be reviewed and determined by the Athletic Director.”

In regard to illness, the general rule is if a student is too ill to attend school for the whole day, they are most likely too ill to compete. If your student has a future absence that needs to be pre-arranged, the link to that form can be found here. It can also be found on our athletics website lolakers.com. Thanks for your cooperation and communication!
