The Wildkat Word: January 2025
Dear Wildkat Families,
Happy New Year! I hope your holiday season was filled with joy, rest, and time spent with loved ones. As we step into the second semester of the school year, I want to take a moment to share my excitement for all that lies ahead.
I hope that each of you had an opportunity this holiday to spend time with your loved ones, rest, and be grateful for the blessings this life brings you each day. I recently read an article that said if you acknowledge three blessings from your day before you go to bed, it will help you sleep more peacefully and wake up more refreshed. I am committing to this practice as one of my New Year goals. It is common for our teachers to discuss this topic with students upon their return to school this week. This can be a great conversation starter for families to share with one another.
The second semester is a time of growth, achievement, and new opportunities. From academic milestones to athletic events, fine arts performances, and the countless ways your children will shine, we are thrilled to continue working together to ensure every student has the tools and support they need to thrive.
This is also a time for reflection and renewed commitment. As a district, we remain focused on providing a safe, nurturing environment where all students can achieve their full potential. We are committed to keeping the lines of communication open and encourage you to reach out with any questions or feedback throughout the semester. Your partnership is invaluable in making this a successful year for all.
As we kick off 2025, let’s continue to celebrate the spirit of the Wildkat community: resilience, determination, and pride. Together, we can ensure that this semester is filled with meaningful learning experiences and memorable moments for all of our students.
Thank you for entrusting us with your children’s education. Let’s make this semester one to remember!
With gratitude,
Dr. Kimberley James

Willis ISD is thrilled to announce a pay increase for all CDL bus drivers!
Starting this week, current CDL bus drivers will see a $1.25 per hour increase, and new drivers will see a $1.25 per hour base rate increase from $19.27 per hour to $20.52 per hour (prior bus driving experience is taken into consideration). Part-time bus drivers will see a rate increase from $16.50 per hour to $20.52 per hour. Additionally, new hire training will be increased from $10.00 per hour to $20.52 per hour.
Transportation operations this school year have been critically impacted by an ongoing driver shortage, and the adjustment is needed to address the shortage. The change will place Willis ISD bus driver starting pay rates above both Conroe ISD and Montgomery ISD.

On the morning of November 22, bus driver Kari Dusebout and bus monitor Krista Pasket went above and beyond, demonstrating extraordinary courage and quick thinking.
While en route to pick up students, they encountered a young child alone on the street and immediately took action to ensure the child’s safety. Their compassion and dedication exemplify the true spirit of heroism and commitment to the well-being of others.
We are grateful for these heroic Wildkats and incredibly proud of their swift and courageous actions!
Thank you to all the parents who took part in Lynn Lucas Middle School's FIRST Family Engagement Friday last month!
Parents had the opportunity to enjoy coffee and a chat with the principal, attend classes, and share lunch with their students. It was a day filled with meaningful conversations, learning, and connection.
Willis ISD is proud to announce that Dr. Gerald Schattle has been named Principal of Homer C. Calfee Middle School, which will welcome students in August 2025.
Dr. Schattle joins Willis ISD from Aldine ISD, where he most recently served as Director of Transportation. From 2017 to 2024, he served as Principal of Teague Middle School and a disciplinary alternative placement school. Before that, he was an Assistant Principal for five years. Dr. Schattle began his career in education as a paraprofessional, teacher, and coach, gaining hands-on experience in multiple aspects of student development.
As a seasoned educator with over two decades of experience, Dr. Schattle has developed a passion for unlocking student potential through his diverse roles and leadership in education. He holds a Doctorate and Master’s in Educational Leadership, both from Lamar University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Houston-Downtown.
Dr. Schattle is also a proud graduate of Nimitz High School in Aldine ISD, which carries a special connection for Willis ISD Superintendent Dr. Kimberley James.
Dr. James shared, "As a fellow graduate of Nimitz High School, I am thrilled to welcome Dr. Schattle to Willis ISD. My father’s legacy as Superintendent of Aldine ISD instilled in me a deep respect for cultivating strong, supportive educational communities. Dr. Schattle’s leadership and experience will ensure Calfee Middle School becomes a place where students thrive and succeed. I am excited to watch Gerald grow the Calfee Middle School community in the coming months."
Dr. Schattle’s appointment marks an exciting chapter in our district's growth as we prepare to open our newest middle school. Schattle will begin working to hire staff in the coming months. Stay tuned for more information from Dr. Schattle as we launch social media pages and a website for the campus. Attendance boundaries will be finalized in the first few months of 2025.

Take a peak into the classroom and see what Willis ISD students have been doing for the
past few weeks!
Willis ISD has launched its Paws of PRIDE program - a special initiative to recognize staff who go above and beyond in their daily roles.
Alongside Superintendent Dr. James, we created the acronym PRIDE.
This acronym stands for:
- Passionate
- Responsive
- Innovative
- Dynamic
- Empathetic
These five values reflect what we expect from our Wildkat staff. Utilizing a form, staff and community members can send personalized appreciation cards to any staff member who they believe is going above and beyond in their duties.
After a thoughtful review, we’re thrilled to recognize Cannan Elementary’s Dawn Trahan and Director of Guidance and Counseling Kelly Locke as last month's Paws of PRIDE honorees! These outstanding staff members have made a remarkable impact on those around them, truly embodying our PRIDE values. They were both honored by the Willis ISD Board of Trustees at the December board meeting.
We encourage you to show your appreciation year-round by submitting a Paws of PRIDE card for any staff member who goes above and beyond. It’s a great way to recognize their hard work and dedication!
There are several places you can go to submit an employee Paws of PRIDE card:
- Direct Link to Form: https://forms.gle/CQJxj1pkjnFCdfFW6
- Visit the Willis ISD Website and click on Paws of Pride under the "Community" tab.
- On any district or campus website, find the Paws of PRIDE button on the right middle of the screen.
- Use the Willis ISD Mobile App: Click on the "paw" icon in the "More" screen.

It also sends messages to school and district administrators 24 hours a day directly on our phones. The alert system can be accessed on the Willis ISD mobile app or on the website linked below!
Ensuring regular attendance is crucial, but we also recognize the significance of family vacations. With that in mind, we designed a comprehensive vacation planning document to assist families in organizing their trips during the academic year.
